WFI releases new publications
|
Now in its sixth year, the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (WFI) continues to make progress in leveraging the University of Nebraska's expertise to address one of the biggest challenges of our time: ensuring a water and food secure world for future generations. Proceedings of the 2016 Water for Food Global Conference
|
The proceedings from the 2016 Water for Food Global Conference, held in association with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, April 24-26 at Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, are available now. The report summarizes three days of presentations and discussions surrounding the theme, "Catalytic Collaborations: Building Public-Private Partnerships for Water and Food Security." Read the report.

WFI shares its expertise at the 2nd World Irrigation Forum
|
WFI represented the University of Nebraska at the
2016 World Irrigation Forum, hosted by the Thai National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, in Chiang Mai, Nov. 6-12. The event was focused on "Water Management in a Changing World: Role of Irrigation in Sustainable Food Production."
Executive Director Peter McCornick was invited to deliver a keynote presentation, "Securing Water and Food: Opportunities in Irrigation." WFI also convened two side events: "SE7 GeoSmart Technologies for Sustainable Irrigation and Drainage," co-sponsored with Geospatial Media, and "SE8 Key and Smart Technologies for Irrigation and Drainage to Reduce Poverty and Hunger."
These side events included presentations by Peter McCornick, Director of Research Christopher Neale, Faculty Fellow Derek Heeren and Global Fellow Wim Bastiaanssen (not pictured). The event was a great opportunity to make new connections with global partners and showcase Nebraska's strengths in irrigation.

In 2015-2016, WFI awarded a total of $112,000 to seven Faculty Fellows through the second year of its student and postdoctoral support

New grad course focuses on water's role in global food security
|
The new Global Water and Food seminar course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (BSEN 492/892) will help give graduate students a better understanding of the scientific and practical aspects of water's role in food security and global development - from smallholder farming in Africa to high-efficiently agricultural production in the High Plains. The course will be co-taught by WFI Founding Executive Director and UNL professor Roberto Lenton and WFI Director of Policy Nick Brozovic. It is open to undergraduate students with permission from instructors.

Mohana Sundaram Shanmugam, postdoctoral researcher
|
Mohana Sundaram Shanmugam joined the Nebraska Water Center as a postdoctoral researcher in June. His research is related to groundwater level modelling and groundwater recharge estimation, with a focus on understanding and precisely estimating hydrological components, such as evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge in the agro-hydrological zone using numerical, remote sensing and GIS tools. His current project work includes modelling the transport of chemicals and pesticides in soil and developing the spatial leachability index mapping for the state of Nebraska.
