Maintenance scheduled for Tuesday, December 20, 2016

The  Tulane Learning Management system will undergo maintenance on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 from 8 a.m. until noon (Central Standard Time). During this time, users will not be able to access the learning management system (including courses and transcripts).

Partner Spotlight:
Chuck Shorter, MPH

Chuck Shorter is the Project Coordinator for the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center. Chuck is an epidemiologist, senior researcher, and project administrator in the Center for Applied Environmental Public Health (CAEPH) at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPH&TM).  He has a long history of managing research projects addressing children's health, with a focus on environmental influence.  He served as the project administrator for the Tulane University Study Center of the National Children's Study. He also was a member of the Tulane Academic Partner for Environmental Public Health Tracking in CDC's EPHT program, contributing to the development of program-wide metadata. In this capacity, he contributed to the design and delivery of metadata training for EPHT stakeholders. He has collaborated with the state of Louisiana Office of Public Health Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, where he was instrumental in establishing the comprehensive Childhood Blood Lead Surveillance System. In addition to his work on childhood health issues he has worked on occupational health and workforce development projects, creating screening models and job matrices for designating employees to training and medical surveillance programs. He is currently dedicated to contributing to the creation of trainings and workforce development tools for the public health workforce. Chuck manages the day-to-day activities of the Region 6 SCPHTC and oversees evaluation and needs identification efforts for Region 6.

Vector Control for Environmental Health Professionals (VCEHP) courses to launch in early 2017.
Seventy-five percent (75%) of all new or emerging diseases threatening human health today are zoonotic or vector-borne illnesses. Environmental health professionals need to be prepared. The Vector Control for Environmental Health Professionals (VCEHP) Series, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a no-cost, 11-course, online curriculum designed to advance environmental
health professionals awareness of public health threats
posed by vectors and pests.

Courses within the curriculum include:
  • Vector-Borne Diseases of Public Health Importance
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Basics for Environmental Health Professionals
  • Performance Assessment & Improvement of Vector Control Services
  • Tick Biology and Control
  • Community Mosquito Biology and Control
  • Toxicology of Pesticides
  • Rodent Management
  • Pests and Vectors in Food & Housing Environments
  • Special Pest Management Considerations for Schools
  • Risk Communication Basics for Public Health Professionals
  • Bed Bug Biology and Control

 Bioterrorism Preparedness
The Bioterrorism Preparedness bundle consists of 5 courses that provide training in bioterrorism preparedness and understanding the public health threat. The Bioterrorism Preparedness bundle also focuses on the emergency providers who respond to bioterrorism events. 

Bioterrorism Preparedness bundle courses:
  • Bioterrorism - 3 credit hours
  • Biological Response Preparedness for Emergency Medical Services - 4 credit hours
