Agriculture remains a priority for York Region. According to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Strategy Report, the economic impact of the agri-food chain in York Region is over six billion dollars.

To further evaluate the current state of the agriculture industry, last year York Regional staff collaborated with the York Region Agricultural Advisory Liaison Group and a third-party consultant, Synthesis Agri-food Network, to survey industry stakeholders. A total of 140 food producers, restaurant industry members and residents provided feedback.

Report findings include:
  • There are 3,578 full-time equivalent jobs in primary agricultural production and 57,000 jobs in the full agri-food sector in York Region.
  • Today, the GDP contribution in the agri-food production sector in York Region is $2.7 billion dollars.
  • The average size of farms in York Region has increased.
  • Farms making less than $100,000 per year are on the decline, however those making $500,000 or more remain stable, this reflects a province-wide trend.
York Regional Council approves five strategic goals to further support the agri-food community. Click Here to view the full report.

On, October 12th, York Regional Council recognized local farming families as part of The Canada 150 Farm Family Program. 4 of the farms recognized are located within Georgina. Farming has changed since 1867, however these families ' dedication and contribution to farming has not. These families are still farming  in York Region, and have been since Confederation  150 years ago.
