Hello Chamber Members,
It is that time of year. Time seems to fly by faster and faster each year. As 2016 comes to a close, we are looking ahead to 2017. We need your input on our Awards selections for our Annual Celebration. We invite you to submit names for our following awards:
The Outstanding Business Person Award
is presented to an individual for community service, civic leadership, personal character, peer respect, and Chamber involvement.
The Outstanding Small Business Award
is presented to a business with fewer than 50 employees for growth, business appearance, community service and Chamber participation.
The Outstanding Large Business Award
is presented to a business with more than 50 employees for growth, business appearance, community service and Chamber participation.
The Outstanding Citizen Award
is presented to an individual whose service to community has reached an exemplary level on multiple fronts.
The Outstanding Volunteer Award is presented to an individual for dedicated community service to an organization or organizations in our non-profit community.
Bruce Montgomery Leadership Boyle County Award
is presented to a leadership Boyle County Graduate who has exhibited outstanding leadership within the community.
Community Impact Award
From time to time, individuals or organizations respond to an identified need and initiate actions that affect people or an issue affecting our community in significant or profound ways. Those responsible for such efforts do not seek personal gain or notoriety. Nevertheless, the results of their actions deserve to be recognized.
The Legacy Award
is bestowed, only on occasion, by the board of your Chamber and is given to honor an individual whose life left an indelible mark on our community.
Email nominations, along with brief details as to why you think this individual, business or organization would be deserving of this award. Give specific examples and be sure to indicate which award you are submitting the nomination for. Email to [email protected]

SAVE THE DATE: Feb. 21, 8:30-10:30 A.M
. for a Community Discussion on Workforce Development, to be held at Boyle County Fire Department located at 1500 Lebanon Road. The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development committee invites any and all who have an interest or a stake in our future workforce.
This meeting is a gathering of all community organizations and individuals who assist local folks with issues/needs which impact their employability. The purpose of this first meeting is to take the first step toward developing a concerted, coordinated community-wide effort to identify and seek solutions to the obstacles that impede individuals from obtaining and retaining employment. This will be the first in a series of meetings to create and implement action steps by early fall. Please consider attending this meeting, and share with others who should be at the table of this discussion and planning.
An initial meeting with Bluegrass Tomorrow to discuss an Idea Festival at Centre College was held in November. Plans will be developed to host one for students in our community at Centre College in 2017. Watch for more details.
The KY Chamber Public Policy Boot Camp was held earlier this month where I learned about some of the legislation filed for the 2017 Legislative Session and the Kentucky Chamber positions on many of the bills. It is anticipated that many bills will see action even though it is a short session. We will be watching - and commenting on our business members' behalf - as necessary.
Thank you to Walmart for a $2000 grant to help sponsor our 2017 Entrepreneur BCHS class! GM Mark Morgan supported our efforts and made this happen.

Chamber of Commerce Members Asked to Participate in
Entrepreneurial Climate Study

Promoting and assisting in the start-up and growth of new businesses is an important part of any state's economic growth strategy. In Kentucky, grant funding has come to the Kentucky Entrepreneur Network (KEN) in order for the KEN to conduct a statewide survey to determine the awareness and perceived effectiveness of programs that are provided in Kentucky to assist entrepreneurs and small business owners. The data to be collected is to be used to improve the entrepreneurial climate in Kentucky and your individual responses will not be shared with anyone.
Many Kentucky Chamber members are entrepreneurs and small business owners of less than 100 employees, while our larger members have many small business vendors and sending the survey link to your vendors is also encouraged. As a result, the Kentucky Chamber has been asked, along with other trade and professional associations, to participate in this important Kentucky Entrepreneurial Climate Study.

Our 2016 BCHS Entrepreneur Class graduated December 13. 23 students in David Christopher's class have learned how to take an idea and write a business plan. They have heard from local businesses who have mentored them, and spoke with them on insurance risk, legal aspects of starting a business and why they need an accountant. They have taken two field trips to businesses and learned from the owners how they run their businesses. This program is about teaching our young people how to develop a business plan. Though they may not open a business in the immediate future, they are learning about business and all that goes into developing an idea and bringing it to fruition. 85% of the job growth in this country comes from small business. We are growing our future economy - one student at a time. James Coffey, owner and President of Pitman Creek Wholesale, spoke at graduation. Winners of the Business Pitch Presentation and a $1000 scholarship were Andrew Dean and Christian Reeves.

Thank you Denise Van Steenlandt and staff for a great Business After Hours on Thursday, December 8. Members enjoyed Bluegrass Community Bank and your hospitality, networking and the wonderful tastes from local restaurants. The winner of the UK basketball tickets was Paula Lanham, a New York Life agent. The winner of the Pot of Gold was not present. The pot now resets for the new year.

Leadership Boyle County spent their day in December learning about the local economy. From small business to large, they visited a small sampling of what makes a vibrant community.

Each month they learn about a different aspect of our community. Graduation is in May 2017. They will join hundreds of others who have graduated since the program's inception in 1983. The Youth Leadership Boyle County class has 25 students participating this year, as well.
