ENERGY'S GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

VEX ROBOTICS CHAMPIONSHIP

The second of three VEX teams won a VEX Robotics championship qualifying for the Texas state VEX Championship.

The Energy Institute High School robotics team currently ranks 11th  in the world in the VEX Robotics Skills Challenge.  The ranking measures the combined skills scores based on driving and programming a robot on a specific obstacle course.

Teacher Spotlight
This week's Thanksgiving teacher spotlight shines upon Energy's Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher, Ms. Lockhart! As a kid, Ms. Lockhart was a natural teacher with a passion for science. Now, as an inspiring educator, she aims at creating students who are overall better humans, successful Chemistry students, and on developing good critical thinkers. Ms. Lockhart is unique in that she is very outgoing and never gives out answers; instead, she turns the question back on the kid with helpful resources to allow students to become better problem solvers. At Energy, Ms. Lockhart teaches Chemistry and AP Chemistry. Unlike traditional schools, Energy students learn through inquiry and hands-on experiments which most appeals to Ms. Lockhart's teaching style. Thank you so much for being a contributing member of the Energy family. You are an exemplary educator, Ms. Lockhart!

Ms. Lockhart's Words of Wisdom: "As you grow up become interesting. Be an interesting person. That comes from reading a lot, asking a lot of questions, not being afraid of hard content, not being afraid to put yourself out there and most of all, becoming interested in things."
My name is Eduardo Martinez, and I'm thankful for my family.

CAMPUS FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK

The Groundbreaking Ceremony
By: Chance Bednorz

This past Saturday was the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school building. Although I am a senior and will not get to see the finished product anytime soon, I participated in the ceremony, reciting a two-voice poem with one of my best friends, Kaleigh Davis. In this poem, we talked about Energy and what this new school meant for the future of E.I.H.S.

The ceremony itself was far more powerful than I anticipated. Teachers - both old and new, students, faculty, trustees, and parents all attended. Being at the front of the stage and looking out into a crowd of mostly unfamiliar, but all friendly faces excited and terrified me. I never really saw how much the school had grown since day one. Time flies when you are having fun, and the groundbreaking ceremony was a time of reflection of all things Energy. Talk of the old school building and past presentations circulated the air. Everyone was happy to move on to bigger and better things. The new school was being built, finally, and this celebration brought that reality back to us.

All of the student presenters were seniors, and most of them had been with Energy since the days when the school was no more than a single hallway. We laughed and joked with one another, telling our own personal anecdotes. The groundbreaking was like an odd family reunion, without all of the drama and a little more chilly.

It's hard to imagine what I would be like not having gone to the Energy Institute. The sad nostalgia I feel - knowing my time as an Energy student is coming to end is - overpowered by my happiness for all I have accomplished through Energy. For future Energy students, I know they will create their own stories and memories in a place representative of Energy's focuses.  Though the first graduating class never got the brand new school building, the sense of culture we established at Energy will live on for generations of students to come. This is our legacy. This is our Energy.
