PTSA NEWS
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that as a collective voice, we are strong. When we have something to say and our ISPTSA with 100% membership speaks, we are heard. This weekend, myself and President Elect Ching Guo, attended the WA state PTA Legislative Assembly. This is where the positions and priorities are decided to approach the Legislature and have bills submitted.

WA state PTA is 135,000 members strong when we speak to the legislature. They listen too, as does the WA Round Table, The League of Education voters, WEA and many others. They were in attendance at a panel regarding PTSA priorities and do they support us? Emphatically it is a YES.

We heard about McCleary and fully Funding Education, Emotional and Social Learning, Training for Paraeducators, Breakfast after the Bell and decreasing the opportunity gap. These are all WA State PTA top 5 priorities and all were discussed at the Legislature. Much of the talk this weekend for the off-Budget year, were resolutions on highly capable students, dual credit and the CTE and CCL opportunities for HS students, school lunch and many other issues that may become priorities next year.

Being a member is more than a name on a list, we are a community supporting IS, and we are a community supporting students statewide. When you become a member, you are supporting all students not just your own.

Best,
Meribeth Nordloef-Pedersen
ISPTSA President 2017-2018

ISPTSA COMPUTER CLUB FOR 9th - 12th GRADERS

This is the second year of the ISPTSA sponsored Computer Club. The goal of the club is to augment International School's Computer Science education curriculum, introduce students to team development concepts, and have fun! Last year, we had more than 20 students participated in the club, two teams submitted WAPTSA GameDev competition entries, and both team won awards, including First Places and Honorable Mentions. Please check out FAQ and Registration form at: https://1drv.ms/w/s!AvaI4f7QcDIBo9oeFCJHMlkF9cLhaw.

Our Info Session will be at IS Room 101 on Wednesday 11/1/2017 at 7:00 pm. Parents are welcome to attend with students and we need volunteers.
USE AMAZON SMILE TO SUPPORT ISPTSA

Do You Shop on Amazon.com?

Support IS PTSA as you shop. The AmazonSmile will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible purchases.
Simply link your Amazon.com account, and our students benefit!
Go to smile.amazon.com, and choose Bellevue International School PTSA as the 'charitable organization' that you would like to link your account to, and Amazon will now give a percentage of all of your eligible purchases to IS PTSA.
If you have Amazon bookmarked in your browser, change your bookmark to Amazon Smile, which allows you to shop as you normally would, but links your purchases to IS PTSA. From now on, please always shop through smile.amazon.com rather than www.amazon.com, and ask your family, and friends to also.
HAVE YOU HEARD?

The 9/17 issue of the Puget Sound Business Journal listed the top high schools in the Puget Sound area. The Top three schools were choice schools, had 99% graduation rate, were ranked in the top 100 nationally. International School was #2. Tesla Stem HS and the International Community School, both in Lake WA school District were ranked No. 1 and No. 3 respectively.

What is missing from our school that their school has? 100% PTSA membership. If you are reading this and have not joined PTSA this year, there is not a better incentive than those numbers to convince you that Community creates Success at IS. Please join here. Over 450 PTSA parents, teachers and students have joined ISPTSA to date. We need 130 more members to be at 100%. Check out our membership roll.

6th GRADE PARENT MEET UP
Courtney and I are excited and honored to be your 6th grade parent reps. We'll be your liaison with PTSA and to help coordinate events like the IS Auction, Staff Appreciation and the monthly Parent Meet Up.

The big reason we decided to be parent reps was to help build and support the community. We believe that the school is only as good as the community makes it to be. And we want our kids to have a great experience here. That said, we'd like to invite you to join us at our first 6th Grade Parent Meet Up. It'll be an opportunity to ask questions, connect with other parents, provide feedback and help the community.
