WEB Leaders Build Relationships at JYMS
The Jack Young Middle School 8th-grade WEB leaders facilitated their second event this year as a way to continue to build relationships and connections with our 6th-graders.

As part of the Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) transitional program at Jack Young Middle School, students are selected through an application and recommendation process to be a leader. Not only do they hold a significant role on 6th-grade orientation day prior to the first day of school, but they also meet on a monthly basis with the same small group of students. During these times, the WEB leaders present academic and social activities to help strengthen ties to our school community.

The October lesson started with a scenario that the WEB leaders announced to their groups, "Imagine that you've been exiled to an abandoned house for a year. On a note card, write down your biggest fear, what you'd miss most, and one luxury item you would take with you."  Students were then given the chance to share one of the three answers. By doing so, students recognized that we all have fears.  As a parting activity, they carved an online pumpkin leaving a message on it acknowledging their fears.

WEB leaders act as a role model to the 6th-graders. They can offer advice on how to deal with the struggles encountered as a middle school student with a different perspective than an adult. Currently, the WEB leaders are working to put together a Snack Pack program as an effort to provide healthy snacks and other items for all 6th-graders, but specifically to help those who are economically disadvantaged. They are looking for funding through Donors Choose. Here is the link to check it out:  Snack Pack Attack: Helping to Stop Hunger

ABE Students Enjoy Classroom Connection
Fourth graders at Al Behrman Elementary enjoyed their first visit with their classroom community connection, Mrs. Korie Klink from Children Are the Hope. Mrs. Klink introduced the 4th graders at ABE to the journey they will be taking throughout the year. Students will learn about cranes, cultures, Cuba, Turkey, and Rwanda. To finish the year, the students will create crane messages for the students in Cuba, Turkey, and Rwanda. Thank you, Mrs. Klink. Our fourth graders can't wait to go on this journey with you!
East Earns PBIS Family Event

PBIS is  a proactive approach  to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.
In Memoriam: Dave Ament
It is with a heavy heart that we share that former Assistant District Administrator of Baraboo Schools David Bruce Ament, 72, of Baraboo, passed away on Oct. 10, 2017.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a specialist degree from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received the John Melcher Award in 1997 in recognition of an outstanding contribution to special education.

He began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Sheboygan Falls, where he became interested in students with struggles. Next he taught emotionally disturbed children in West Bend, later becoming Director of Special Education for CESA 5, and finally Assistant District Administrator of Baraboo Schools. He guided a few small districts in special education after his retirement in 2000. He served on the board for Counsel of Administrators of Special Education.

GLW Classrooms Make Friendship Chain
Mrs. Gissal's 4th grade and Ms. Nelson's kindergarten classes at Gordon L. Willson Elementary are math buddies this year!
They met this past week for the second time and worked together to decorate chain links with pictures and things that symbolized their likes and differences. The kindergarteners recognized the color pattern and the 4th graders added extra links with growth mindset phrases.
The focus of this activity was to get to know eachother better, build cross-grade le vel connections, and to realize that no matter our differences we all belong and we all fit together as a team.
The friendship chain now joins the two classrooms together!  #Barabooproud

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Today is Purple Thursday - Show your support for survivors and start a conversation about domestic violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and as part of the National Network to End Domestic Violence's Week of Action, people across the country are wearing purple today as a sign of support for survivors of domestic violence. Abuse in relationships is a subject we often don't talk about, but we know that talking openly is key to prevention - as well as to letting those affected by domestic violence know that they're not alone. While it can be a hard conversation to start, we all have an opportunity to be part of the solution. As a young person, you can call out harmful language, be critical of the media, and let friends know that you're there to listen if they're ever a victim of abuse. Parents and guardians can tell kids that violence is never okay and teach peaceful conflict resolution skills. Teachers can break the silence by bringing dialogue about domestic violence, gender norms, and unhealthy media messages into the classroom, as well as letting students know you're a resource if they ever experience violence in the home. For more information about Domestic Violence Awareness Month, visit Hope House's website. If you or someone you know has been affected by domestic abuse, you can call Hope House's 24-hour confidential helpline at 608-356-7500.
Free Public Screening of Flirting with Danger
Free public screening of Flirting With Danger
Monday, October 30th, 5:30-7pm, UW-Baraboo/Sauk County Cafeteria

Where is the line between consent and coercion? How do contradictory societal messages about female sexuality shape young women's experiences of safety and violence? Join Hope House and the UW-Baraboo Sauk County PRIDE Club in discussing these questions and more through a screening of Flirting With Danger, a documentary about the complexities of power and choice in young adults' heterosexual relationships. Help us recognize the end of Domestic Violence Awareness Month by engaging in honest conversation about the cultural factors that contribute to sexual and relationship violence - as well as how we can all make a difference by promoting values of equality and consent.

Please note: the documentary includes sexual imagery taken from mainstream media, explicit language, and discussion of sexual and relationship violence. A Hope House staff person will be available to provide support during or after the film. If you or someone you  know is experiencing domestic or sexual abuse, you can call Hope House's 24-hour confidential helpline at  608-356-9123.
