Ron Phillips to Retire as Folsom Fire Chief
Folsom Fire Chief Ron Phillips announced his plans to retire on December 30, after 35 years of California fire service and 14 years with the City of Folsom. Phillips was appointed chief in November 2010 after serving as Folsom's fire marshal and deputy fire chief from May 2002. During his tenure, Phillips worked to maintain and improve emergency services in the community during difficult economic times. He has also been instrumental in regional emergency management and fire and rescue services.

Folsom City Manager Evert Palmer announced the appointment of Dan Haverty as interim fire chief of the department, effective immediately upon Phillip's departure. Recruitment for a permanent fire chief is underway. Haverty is a 30-year fire service veteran, and was the City of Folsom's fire chief from 2007 to 2010. He was also the interim fire chief for the cities of Sacramento and Lodi, and served with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District for 20 years. Learn more.
Keep Pipes Free of Fats, Oils and Grease this Holiday
The holidays are a time for families and friends to share a hearty home-cooked meal together, and the City of Folsom's Environmental and Water Resources Department wants to remind residents to dispose of food properly.
Fats, oils and grease, also known as FOG, can clog sewer pipes and cause overflows. Food items such as butter, gravy, meat fats, sour cream, ice cream and salad dressings are considered FOG. Properly disposing of FOG will help avoid expensive plumber visits, prevent blockages in the City's sewer system and protect our river, creeks and streams.
Those cooking for the holidays should place cooled oil and grease into trash bins or covered collection containers, use a strainer in the sink to collect excess food particles, scrape food scraps from dishes into trash bins, and manually wipe off all visible FOG residue from dishes and cookware into trash bins. For more information, call 916- 355-8365 or visit www.folsom.ca.us/fog.

Road Closures for Folsom Turkey Trot
The Folsom Turkey Trot, an annual 10K run and 5K run/walk, will feature new routes this year, requiring closures of various Folsom streets on Thanksgiving morning.  The event benefits the Twin Lakes Food Bank and the Folsom Athletic Association's Never in Our Town Youth Scholarship Program.  More than $300,000 has been raised since the race began in 2007.

The 10K run will begin at 8:50 a.m. and the 5K run/walk will begin at 9:10 a.m. at the City Lion's Park, located at 403 Stafford Street, near the Folsom Public Library and Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.  Both runs end at City Lion's Park.
The courses are on Folsom trails, bridges, and streets, including Natoma, Riley, Stafford and Leidesdorff streets.  There will be various road closures on multiple streets and rolling road closures to allow traffic in or out.  Police officers and course monitors will guide traffic and detour signs will be marked.  View the course maps or visit www.folsomturkeytrot.com for road closure details and more information.
