Letting in the light - Federation submission to culture review

Following input from diverse expertise in the membership, the Federation has completed its submission to the federal cultural policy consultation "Canadian Content in a Digital World." Our recommendations emphasize the crucial contributions the HSS community makes to Canadian culture by teaching both creators and audiences, producing knowledge for and about culture, and creating important cultural products. 
Highlights from the Federation's Annual Conference

Engaging speakers and a dynamic audience made for a spirited day of discussing cities and the role for HSS at the Federation's Annual Conference in Toronto on November 9. University of Toronto news and University Affairs covered the event, which explored pluralism, democracy and innovation in the context of urban settings. Big Thinking on the road - Digital inclusion and education for citizenship

On November 19, Catherine Middleton, Canada Research Chair in
Communication Technologies in the Information Society at Ryerson University,
delivered her Big Thinking lecture "There's an App for that?" addressing the policy challenges of digital inclusion at the Royal Society of Canada Annual General Meeting. Watch the video online.
Joel Westheimer , University Research Chair in Democracy and Education at the University of Ottawa , gave his Big Thinking lecture "Building skills for citizenship: Educating our children for the common good" as part of the Conference Board of Canada's 4th Skills and Post-Secondary Education Summit in Toronto on December 1. Big Thinking on the Hill

Elaine Craig , Associate Professor at Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, and Carissima Mathen, Associate Professor of Law, University of Ottawa, spoke to Parliamentarians on November 29 helping to explore "Do we need to rethink sexual assault law?" This event was moderated by Federation Board Member Lisa Philipps, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. Our Spring 2017 line up will feature: Matthew Hayday
Associate Professor, University of Guelph, who will speak about Canada 150 celebrations and national identities; Keith Banting, Professor of Political Studies and Policy Studies, Queen's University, who will examine the future of refugee resettlement and immigration in Canada; and Stephen Toope, Federation President and Director, Munk School of Global Affairs,  who will address the topic of Canada and the world.

Tanis Doe Award announcement
The CDSA-ACEI Tanis Doe Award for Canadian Disability Study and Culture honours an individual who dares to "speak the unspeakable" in advancing the study and culture of disability,  and who has enriched the lives of Canadians with disabilities through research, teaching, or activism.  Congratulations to the 2016 award recipients
Errol Sharpe Book Prize
The Society for the Socialist Studies announced that Gordon Laxer, political economist and professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, has been awarded the second annual Errol Sharpe book prize for After the Sands: Energy and Ecological Security for Canadians (Douglas and McIntyre, 2015).

Are you a storyteller?


The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has launched their annual #SSHRCStorytellers challenge. Open to all post-secondary students, this contest asks students to show Canadians how humanities and social sciences research is positively affecting our lives, our world and our future. Submissions will be accepted January 9-31, 2017. For full contest details and to find out how you can present live at Congress 2017, click here .
Federal spending
on First Nations education

The Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer released a report on  federal spending on primary and secondary education for First Nations students living on reserves. Read the full report here.  
Partnership for Open Access Dissemination

Érudit, a not-for-profit consortium, and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CKRN) have established a partnership to support Canadian scholarly journals and Open Access dissemination. You can also watch a presentation by Vincent Larivière, professor at l'Université de Montréal and Academic Director of Érudit, on the concentration of academic publishers.  




OPC call for proposals


The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has issued a call for proposals under its 2017-2018 Contributions Program which funds independent privacy research and related knowledge translation initiatives.
