K-State commissions three cadets at Polytechnic Campus ceremony
From college student and cadet to graduate and second lieutenant!
Three K-State students will be serving the country in the United States Air Force after going through the ROTC Fall 2016 Commissioning ceremony on the Polytechnic Campus on Dec. 9. Ryan Massman (top right photo), Jacob Masters (bottom left photo) and Kyle Rittel (bottom right photo) have transitioned from cadet to second lieutenant and have each received their first duty for the military.
Massman, a fall graduate from Scotia, Nebraska, earned a degree in chemical engineering from the Manhattan Campus and will find his first duty at Vandenberg AFB in California.
Masters, a fall graduate from Burlingame, Kansas, earned a degree in Avionics Systems and Management from the Polytechnic Campus and will find his first duty at Laughlin AFB in Texas.
Rittel, a spring 2016 graduate from Salina, Kansas, earned a degree in technology management from the Polytechnic Campus and will find his first duty at Aviano Air Base in Italy.
Congratulations men, and Godspeed!

K-State Polytechnic I.S. department warns 'beware of phishing scams'
The Information Systems department at Kansas State Polytechnic is sending a warning to faculty, staff and students about the security of your email.
Recently, there have been a variety of phishing scams sent to K-Staters through email and information systems wants you to know K-State will NEVER ask for your password in an email.
Since August 2016, 2,308 phishing scams have been reported, and 1,092 eIDs have been compromised.
If you think you may have given away your K-State eID and password to a phishing scam, follow these suggestions:
1) Change your password immediately.
2) Turn off your computer and alert Information Systems at 785-826-2666 who will check to determine if malware is on your computer.
If Information Systems is unavailable, contact the IT Help Desk at 785-532-7722.
3) Check email forwarding to determine if settings have been changed.
4) Check "Sent" and "Drafts" email folders to see if your account has been used to send additional scams to others. Delete any "Drafts" to keep them from going out and notify recipients of any "Sent" that your previous email was a scam. Use some other means than email to notify them.
5) If you use similar passwords on other accounts (bank account, health care, retirement, etc.), change those passwords as well.
6) Review your bank and credit card statements for the next year to look for suspicious activity. NOTE: Sometimes scammers will hold the personal identity information and use at other times.
7) Stay tuned! The folks at iTAC will be offering online phishing scam training in the near future.

President Myers addresses graduates' future, Polytechnic Campus' future in new interview with Salina Journal
Shortly after Richard B. Myers was named the 14th president of Kansas State University, he gave the keynote address at commencement on the Polytechnic Campus. Among his advice for the students turned professionals was leading with
c
haracter, integrity, selflessness and intelligence, and making a difference for everyone.
President Myers also noted that there seems to be a lot of criticism of today's youth, but he is encouraged not dismayed by young people.
"We have the cream of the crop right here," he said proudly to the 42 fall graduates.
President Myers was interviewed by the Salina Journal before he took the stage at the Student Life Center, and spoke about his perspective on education in general as well as the exciting things in store for the Polytechnic Campus.

Trevor Witt's unique title of graduate and father the subject of Salina Journal story
It is quite understandable that the days leading up to commencement can be frenzied for graduates, but for UAS senior Trevor Witt life was especially hectic.
Witt became a first time father just 48 hours before he was set to walk in the procession at the Student Life Center and receive his degree.
On Dec. 7, Witt's son Asher was born and on Dec. 9, Witt proudly accepted his bachelor's of aeronautical technology in UAS in front of his family, including his wife. He even managed to graduate Summa Cum Laude.
Witt's unique story became the subject of a feature in the Salina Journal, which also spotlighted his commitment
to drone education - furthering his own knowledge as well as the industry.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

I would like to give each fall graduate a high-five for working so hard during your time here, and staying determined to cross the finish line. I am proud of what you have accomplished and wish you the best of luck as you start your next chapter. Please stay in touch.

The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. Campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee).
