Notes from Head of School

Our mission and values could not be more clear.  We are a school that values respect for all, that believes that we are all equal, and that affirms the light that exists in each person.  We are a welcoming community that embraces the simplicity that comes from the expectation that we love one another and knows that we can solve our problems peacefully.  These attributes of our belief system apply to all of us, regardless of gender, race, religion, class, sexual orientation, political affiliation or citizenship.

We have endured a long election campaign with rhetoric that was disrespectful, divisive and hurtful and contrary to the mission and values of this school.   The election itself has left so many of us deeply troubled and stunned.

As we process what this means, it is important to reaffirm the values that this school stands for, and to tell our children that we will protect them, and will continue to work to make a just, peaceful and respectful world.  It is important to emphasize that the work to do so continues, and that there is so much that goes on between elections by each citizen to bring about that world. It is also important to emphasize that each of us has a voice that we must continue to raise to our government, and to one another, to reaffirm our values.

This week, we had meeting for worship in classrooms to provide students with an opportunity to share how they were feeling.  We have also continued with our curriculum to underscore that despite what is going on in the larger world, life will continue.  PreK and Kindergarten made apple cider and visited a farm. The first and second grades continued with their work on Monarch butterflies and this morning they went for a walk to the park.  The third and fourth grades have continued their work on Native Americans and the Encounter, and the fifth and sixth grade went to Philadelphia to continue their "Art is Ageless" project with senior citizens.  All the while, our teachers and staff are offering safety and support for your children, and are keeping a close watch on their feelings.

For additional information on how to talk to children about this election, please  read this article by Ali Michael, Ph.D.

We know that we need time to come together and make sense of what has happened.  The school will have a worship-sharing this coming Monday night, from 6:15-7:15 for all of our parents and others in our community in the Meetinghouse.  To make it possible for parents to attend, we will provide childcare during this time, and can provide pizza to hold children over until you can give them a fuller dinner after that.  Please let T. Clara Flores know how many slices of pizza we should order for your children and provide $1 per slice on Monday.

In peace,

John
Gathering: 1/2 Tr. Narissa: Test your knowledge
1/2 wait expectantly for the rest of the school to join them

The First and Second graders in Teacher Narissa's class tested our knowledge of Monarch butterflies and Dia de Muertos. They were wondering if we had paid attention to their peers last week!
They waited anxiously for us to join the group that we usually have for worship sharing. Then, they quizzed us on the questions that they had prepared. It was an exciting Gathering. Thank you 1/2 and Teacher Narissa.

Did you know that the tradition of preparing monthly meals for those in need was the idea of a first grader, over 20 years ago?

Every since then, classes have taken turns cutting vegetables, cooking meat and mixing ingredients in order to provide a hearty, delicious pasta dish to be donated to the  Life Center of Eastern Delaware County. Talk about integrated learning!

The organization that we lovingly refer to as "The Life Center" provides various services to individuals who are currently without homes.

If you are inspired to support the Life Center, they are in need of volunteers to serve Thanksgiving Dinner. To sign up for a shift, contact Saundra Patrick at (610) 735-5770 or spatrick@caadc.org

Families and School Worship Share on Monday

The school community will have a worship-sharing this coming Monday night, from 6:15-7:15 for all of our parents and others in our community in the Meetinghouse.  To make it possible for parents to attend, we will provide childcare during this time, and can provide pizza to hold children over until you can give them a fuller dinner after that.  Please let T. Clara Flores know how many slices of pizza we should order for your children and provide $1 per slice on Monday.

If you wish to make yourself familiar with worship sharing, here are the guidelines.
Grand Friends (and other Special People) Day
Invitations have gone out for Grand Friends Day. This is a great opportunity for our students to show their school and their work to their grandparents or those who are welcome in that family role.
To RSPV, your Grand Friends may give us a call or contact Nancy Werner.

Grand Friends Day is on November 22 (Tuesday before Thanksgiving). The day will start with refreshments in the cafeteria at 8:30.

The day will end at noon (early dismissal). It marks the start of our Fall Break.
A Global Day of Giving
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Lansdowne Friends School is participating in this international event.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Your continued support to Lansdowne Friends School helps fill the financial gap between tuition income and the actual cost of educating each child. Funds from this campaign go toward supplies, field trips, robotics, enrichment activities, projects, campus improvement, technology upkeep and many more.

Thank you.
