Rink Grant Suspended

The Community Rink Affordability Grant has been suspended. The popular program, administered by the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association and funded by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport, provided annual grants of $2,500 per ice surface to offset the cost of rink operations and minor capital upgrades. Last year, the grant benefitted 373 communities, supporting 633 ice surfaces across the province.

In September, the provincial government announced it would renew the grant for $1.7 million for the 2016-17 fiscal year, but the funding was pulled November 22, the same day the province released its mid-year financial report, showing a larger than expected deficit forecast of $1 billion by the end of the fiscal year. The ministry will include the grant in their 2017-18 budget submission, but it will be competing with other government priorities.
