Henry Lumber Co. of Marion, Ohio, has purchased a storefront downtown where it will open a retail showroom by spring 2018 -- just in time for its 60th anniversary. The company has wanted to expand beyond commodities for several years but found its current location less than ideal for appealing to consumers, considering its proximity to railroad tracks and its lack of space for displays.
Anyone who has shopped at a home center or worked in lumber has likely been to a location that CT Darnell Construction, Alpharetta, Ga., designed, built or equipped. The company is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The family-owned business started in Atlanta in 1987, supplying its Sunbelt Rack storage systems to burgeoning big-box retailers. Over the years, offerings were expanded to include site planning, design and construction of LBM and retail facilities, as well as site renovations.
Dyke Industries, Inc., a wholesale distributor of a broad line of building materials, millwork and related products since 1866 has licensed CAI's Ponderosa Enterprise Resource Planning Software. Dyke Industries, Inc. is a family-owned company serving the Southeast. The present-day company, incorporated in 1942, is the successor to two millwork manufacturing companies, Dyke Bros., which was established in Fort Smith, Ark., in 1870, and Cole Manufacturing Company, which was established in Memphis, Tenn., in 1866.

How Companies are Closing the Skills Gap for Youth in the U.S.
At the International Youth Foundation, we know that too many young people have inadequate access to opportunities to learn, grow, and hone their skills. This month, the
Business Roundtable released
Work in Progress: How CEOs Are Helping Close America's Skills Gap, a report outlining the difficulty U.S. companies face in finding workers with the right competencies and how 63 companies are undertaking projects to make sure workers of all ages can get and keep the jobs of today and tomorrow.
The report identifies three types of skills gaps that companies in the U.S. face: lack of fundamental skills like communication and working in teams; lack of a specialized skill for the trade industry; and lack of applicants who have skills related to science, technology, engineering, and math. Here are three ways companies in the United States are working to close these gaps for young people:

This Old House Addressing Skills Gap in the Vocational Trades
The producers and stars of
This Old House are trying to help close the skills gap by encouraging young people to master the vocational trades that built this country. They have joined the mikeroweWORKS Foundation in a new initiative they are calling Generation Next.
The show launched a nationwide search for three apprentices to work alongside the expert TOH crew in its 2017 renovation project in the Boston area. They also selected five "homegrown" apprentices from the Boston area to work with subcontractors.
The goal? To expose more young people to the possibility of learning a skilled trade that can become a career. The popular TV show is dedicating air time, as well as space in its website and magazine, to this effort.

Why the Equifax Hack Has
Small Business Owners Worried
Small business owners say they're worried the Equifax hack could hurt both their personal finances and their businesses.
For many, their ability to access credit needed to pay employees or order inventory is closely tied to their personal credit score.
"The Equifax breach of my personal information puts our entire business at risk," said Dawn Lea Chalmers, owner of the boutique clothing store Kademi in Mississippi.
She is joining a lawsuit filed against Equifax, asking to be reimbursed for the cost and time spent monitoring financial accounts and looking for signs of identity theft.
Chalmers hasn't seen any suspicious activity. But the information exposed in the hack could be used by criminals to open fraudulent accounts, damaging her credit score. That could lead to higher interest rates or outright rejection of a loan application. If that happens, Chalmers fears she won't be able to purchase merchandise for the store.
