The Cost of Privilege
"I believe that every thought and every act of racism is harmful; if it is my thought or act, it is harmful to me as well as others."
~The Birmingham Pledge
In one of my earliest memories - I must have been only about age 3 or 4 - my family stands around me. I am seated in a blue tweed easy chair in the living room. There are many faces encircling me. In my memory, I see the scene alternately from my seated vantage point and as someone standing just outside the circle. I am being asked to say "negro." Someone special is coming to visit - a new friend - and I'm being coached to see whether I can say the word clearly. If I can it will be fine. If not, I will hurt our new friend's feelings. It will be very, very bad if I say the word unclearly. Which, of course, is what I do. It's agreed, then, that if I have any cause to comment on the appearance of our new friend, I should use the word "black."

Never Been to the Serendipity Auction Before? Here's Why You Will Have a Great Time
|
The Serendipity Auction is often called the "social highlight of the church calendar." If you've never been to this spectacular event you may be wondering why.
On November 11th, the sanctuary will be transformed into an elegant auction hall. Some members will dress up, but it's not required.
Get to know someone new over a delicious dinner (there will be gluten-free and vegetarian options). Then walk around the silent auction tables and make some bids. Click here to read more.

Are you interested in learning more about gender and what it means in this culture? Have you heard someone say they're "genderqueer" or "genderfluid" and weren't sure what to say next? Do you want to feel more comfortable talking about gender?
Join the Rainbow Alliance for a "Beyond the Gender Binary" workshop. Together we will ask and answer questions of one another, and explore ways to support people of all genders within the Beloved Community.

Sunday October 15 is the day of the annual North Shore CROP Hunger Walk - and our our K-1-2nd and 3-4-5th RE classes will be engaged in special activities this Sunday to help us get ready!
Claudia Dancing will be our food justice storyteller for the day; Barbara Ghoshal will lead a session in signmaking and windfeathers; and Mary Shelden and Woody Haynes will lead a song circle station! After our activities, our young activists will then rejoin the adults upstairs at the end of the service - so look for our young people there! Whether your family will be joining us for the actual Crop Walk at 2pm or just for the service, we know our children will come away from our time together on Sunday with new knowledge and skills for peaceful advocacy.
You can register to walk or to donate to our team online here, or at a table in the back of the sanctuary on Sunday. Click here to read more.
