Congratulations Mr. Garcia

Congratulations to Mr. Steve Garcia who was honored before the football game Friday night as the "Teacher of the Game".  The teacher is voted in by the students based on excellence in the classroom along with involvement with the school.

Mr. Garcia has been teaching at Garces since 1995.  He teaches AP Calculus, Calculus Prep, Math Analysis Prep, and Math Analysis Honors.  He is also the Director of Garces Summer School.  Steve is not only a teacher, he is a proud alumnus and current parent.  He and his wife Tammy are the proud parents of Garces cheerleader, Erin Garcia.  Steve is well-liked and well respected by the student body and known for being a die-hard LA Dodgers fan.

Some of the comments by the students who voted him in:

  • Mr. Garcia often greets the class with "Good morning. Thank you for coming."
  • He makes homemade cookies for his classes for special occasions.
  • He makes sure you pay attention and you learn the lesson.
  • He makes math enjoyable.

Thank you Mr. Garcia for all you do for Garces.  We hope you enjoy your Teacher of the Game t-shirt and wear it with pride.
Bob Carroll Service Award Honorees
Congratulations to Mr. Jim McMurtrey & Mr. John Pavletich

During halftime of Friday night's football game, the Garces Athletic Department honored two wonderful men for all they have done, and continue to do, for the Garces Athletic Department - Mr. Jim McMurtrey and Mr. John Pavletich.  They were presented with the Bob Carroll Service Award.  Bob Carroll was a teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator at Garces for 29 years - from 1951 until he retired in 1981. The Bob Carroll Service Award was created in 1987 to recognize long-time service to, and support of, the school as exemplified by Bob Carroll's storied career.  The Garces Athletic Department  extends their sincere thanks and gratitude to Jim McMurtrey and John Pavletich.

Below are the biographies that were printed in the program:

Mr. Jim McMurtrey
James 'Jimmy' McMurtrey comes from a Garces legacy family. Jimmy graduated from Highland High School, but has always kept a tight connection to the Garces community through his father, Jon McMurtery, who graduated from Garces in 1958. This past spring The Mac & Stella McMurtrey Family received the prestigious Garces Alumni Award at the Hall of Honor Awards Banquet. Jimmy has been actively involved in Garces since 2006 when is eldest son Mason - Class of 2010 - began attending Garces. Jimmy and his wife Anna have since had 4 other children attend Garces.  Hayden - Class of 2014, Corbin - Class of 2017, Logan - Class of 2019 and Addisyn - Class of 2021.  Jimmy's support of Catholic Education and the mission of Garces, often behind the scenes, is part of the legacy. Jimmy was the project manager for the remodel of the gym lobby and the Garces Collaborative Learning Center. Jimmy is also an active member of the Hail Mary Club, which supports Garces extracurricular programs.  His family describes him as hardworking, dedicated, loyal, easy-going, generous and faithful. He is a lover of pets. He currently has 47 turtles, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 1 extremely large catfish. He even once had an alligator. He is a classic car enthusiast. He son Logan stated, "My dad taught me all about Classic Cars. My favorite thing growing up was going to car shows and car buying trips. A favorite quote I remember my dad saying happened once when we were driving home in the Lincoln and the song "Celebration" came on and he told me to make sure I played it at his funeral."  Jimmy is the Vice President and CFO of a successful construction company, McMurtrey Lince Construction. He is a true Garces ambassador, benefactor and volunteer. His eldest son, Mason, stated, "My dad taught me the importance of working hard, valuing my work, and that family comes first."

Mr. John Pavletich
John Pavletich has been supporting Garces Memorial High School for many years.  It started when John and Deanna Pavletich's eldest daughter, Jessica (Class of 2011), began attending Garces 10 years ago. They have since had 3 other children attend Garces.  Jake - Class of 2014, Jordyn - Class of 2016, and Josh - Class of 2019.  John is well-known for his sports broadcasting skills. With 18 years of sports broadcasting experience at Bakersfield College, it was natural for John to step into this role at Garces, as well. While his daughters attended Garces, John was the water polo announcer during their water polo matches. His daughter Jordyn states, "He is the person I go to if I ever need anything. No matter what the problem is, he drops everything to help out his kids." He was also a substitute sports broadcaster for football games when Mark Brown was busy with cross country meets or hunting trips. His voice was well-known throughout the valley.  While John's eldest son, Jake, attended Garces you could find him down on the baseball field prepping the field, BBQing for the boys, and supporting the players throughout the games. He donated countless hours of his personal time to make sure the baseball program had everything it needed to succeed. His son Jake stated, " You never know what he is thinking. He's always planning something to create laughter in the room."  John graduated from Shafter High School in 1984. He attended Merced College and finished is degree in business at California State University Bakersfield. He is the CEO of a very successful electrical company for over 23 years, Pavletich Electric. He has been married to Deanna for 27 years and he is an awesome husband and father. John loves to plan family vacations, especially surprise ones. His daughter Jessica states, "I will never pass on a vacation with my father because it will be the most detailed, exhilarating, and adventurous trips to go on." His main focus is that the people around him are happy.
When asked, John has always come through for Garces.  He is a true Garces ambassador, benefactor and volunteer.
100 Year Anniversary of Fatima

In recognition of the 100 year anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun near Fatima, Portugal, every theology class on Thursday and Friday began their class period in the Grotto in front of the statue of the Blessed Mother. Students adorned the statue with flowers, prayed a rosary together as a group, and then went into the chapel and heard a presentation on Fatima from Mr. Tim Gordon, Garces Director of Faith Formation.

During the rosary, Mr. Gordon explained all of the steps, the symbolism, and the purpose of praying a rosary.  He also explained that in  all Her appearances at Fatima, the Blessed Mother repeatedly emphasized the necessity of praying the  Rosary daily

The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared six times to three shepherd children near the town of Fatima, Portugal between May 13 and October 13, 1917.

Checkmate

Monday was National Chess Day so naturally Garces Student Activities Director Ms. Caitlin Witwer decided to bring chess boards to the gym during lunch to let students play.  We had lots of students playing and more watching to see who had the better strategy.  But mostly everyone wanted to see who got to shout "checkmate".

THE GARCES VICTORY BELL

When the football team joyfully rang the victory bell after last Friday's upset of the BHS Drillers, they were carrying on a tradition that dates back to the school's earliest days.

The bell we still use today made its debut in 1952, mounted on a wooden stand on the sidelines at home games.  In the early 1960s, Eagleson Bodyworks donated its trailer and for several decades it rang at games all over the valley.

The bell is traditionally rung once for each point scored.  Its busiest night ever at Tobias Field came after the 1999 Paraclete game (my all-time favorite Garces game).  Tied 56-all, we blocked Paraclete's field goal attempt on the last play of the game and ran it back for the winning touchdown.  The team members had to take turns to ring it 62 times that night.

Alumni Masses

Admin Corner
Message from
Ms. Caitlin Witwer
Director of Student Activities

Dear Parents,

Can you believe Homecoming is already here? Homecoming is a great way to celebrate the new school year with alumni, recurring students, and the new freshmen. As always I have been thoroughly impressed by the talent, school spirit, and commitment the students have displayed in an effort to  make this school year great!

Next week I am excited to help the students execute what should be another successful Homecoming Week. The ASB class came up with the theme of "International Festivals" and planned various dress up days to fit the theme. Please encourage your students to dress up as we want to the campus to feel fun and festive all week!
Beginning on Sunday, the students will start building their backdrops for their skits and by now many of you may have been recruited to help! A mandatory run though of the entire performance will be held during the start of collaboration on Thursday.

We hope to see all of you at the Homecoming Game Friday night as it should be a memorable evening. Between the JV and Varsity game, we will introduce the Homecoming Court as they are driven around the track, so pleased make sure to arrive early. Then, at halftime, we will have a performance by the cheerleaders, the class skits, and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen.

Please encourage your students to purchase a Homecoming T-shirt, which will go on sale Wednesday for $15. Each class had the opportunity to design their own shirt, and I'm truly blown away by what they came up with!

The Homecoming Dance is scheduled for October 21st 7-9:30 in MLH, the theme is Mardi Gras. Tickets to the Homecoming Dance will be on sale all week for $15.
In celebration of our 70th anniversary here at Garces I hope to see our students dressed up each day, our stands full on Friday night, and all of our students at our Homecoming Dance.

If you ever have any questions, or any ideas to help promote school spirit, please reach out to me at
