"What Comes Next?"
It was quite a sight to see 40,000 counter-protesters marching in Boston last weekend, marching against White Supremacy, Neo-Nazism, and all forms of oppression. We were proud of Boston and energized by what seemed like universal agreement that we are united in love and support for one another.

So now the hard question: what comes next? How do we translate that energy and love into action that will generate change? What is God calling us to do?

It is easy to be against White Supremacy when it comes with Nazi flags and hate speech . But white supremacy has been at the heart of American culture since European settlers first arrived here.  And despite all of the legal and social progress we have made, it continues to be a dominant force that shapes our lives -- from where we live, where we went to school and where our children go to school to our physical and emotional health. Every set of statistics that reveal racial disparities reveal the extent to which systemic racism is at work and is reproducing itself from generation to generation.

Our prayer must be for deep social change. And when we pray, let's move our feet. Here are some small steps we can take to keep Saturday's energy moving us forward:
  • Volunteer to support the 400 students at the McCormack Middle School in Dorchester. If you can help paint a classroom or two on August 29, or want to be put on a list to learn about future projects, click here.
  • Sign up to help a student in the TEEP program raise money for TEEP. Twelve TEEP graduates have signed up to Ride in the Rodman Ride for Kids on September 23. You can sign up to ride with them or you can join a fundraising team to support one of them. Get to know these amazing young people. To learn more, click here.
  • Become an Old Sole. Commit 1-2 hours a week and join a supportive community of caring individuals who bring out the best in young people and adults. No running experience required! Or sign up for the Sole Train 5K as a runner, volunteer, or sponsor.
  • Give generously to causes that are explicit about their efforts to undo racism. If the 40,000 who marched demanded that conversations about race and racism stay as vocal and visible as the marchers were last Saturday, we could make real, lasting change.

Let's keep our walking shoes laced up. We have many miles to cover.

With gratitude and commitment,

SongA New Song

Last Sunday, August 20, the Trinity community gathered in Copley Square after the 10 a.m. service to sing hymns of prayer, praise, and patriotism. In response to the tides of hatred and violence that have swept our country, Trinity offered our voices in a new song. Visit our website to view the entire slideshow.
