National Merit Program
Lancers earn prestigious academic recognition.

Congratulations to 18 Lake Park students who have earned academic recognition through the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Semifinalists: Seniors Andrew Beugnet and Sahil Patel have been selected as Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They were selected based on test scores of the 2016 PSAT/NMSQT and represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards worth $32 million.

Commended Students : Seniors Jillian Alonzo, Thomas Ballard, Eric Bayer, Caroline Dickerson, Aastha Garg, Jordan Haigh, Peter Jezusek, Sarah Kueking, Matteo Marcheschi, Zuly Pasillas-Riquelme, Rahi Patel, Elizabeth Pusateri, Henry Sprandel, and Daniel Tedeschi have been selected among  34,000 Commended Students nationwide who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million juniors who entered the 2018 competition  and may become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

National Hispanic Recognition: Emanuel Carrera, Christian Guenther and Zuly Pasillas-Riquelme have been selected as 2018 National Hispanic Recognition Program award recipients. The College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT.

Social Studies Movie Night Series Returns
Free community screening, discussion on Wednesday, October 18.

Now in it's third year, the "Social Studies Movie Night" series returns next Wednesday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium. Students, families and community members are invited to participate in this free opportunity.

"Hidden Figures" will be the first movie screened for the 2017-18 school year. As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers," the movie follows these women as they quickly rose through the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit and guaranteeing his safe return.

Students will have the opportunity to analyze how the women in the movie challenged gender, race, and professional lines during the early 1960's, as well as the impact of the Cold War on the development of the Space Race. The extra credit assignment must be turned in to teachers by Friday, October 20.
