Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the fires. One of our own lost her home due to this fire and Latino Service Providers is doing what they can to help our community get through this hard time. Together we will get through this.
Our Sonoma County community has been devastated by the wildfires. Many Latino families have been severely impacted by the fires, including Latino Service Providers staff.  The Latino Service Providers is accepting donations for fire victims as a part of the organization's mission to build a healthier community by serving Latino families and children. The funds will help address the immediate needs of Latino families that have lost their homes and their belongings.  Latino Service Provider's Executive Director Wanda Tapia has been community leader in Sonoma County for over 28 years, and will assist in distributing the funds.

From 10,000 Degrees:
Dear Friends,

I am reaching out today to extend all of our thoughts, prayers and love to the people and communities affected by this horrific tragedy.

We know many who have lost homes, many who still don't know and who continue to worry about their pets and loved ones and several of our students, staff and their families have been evacuated.

As we watch the devastation unfold, communities are coming together, despite any divide, and taking care of one another. The outpouring of love and humankind has been amazing. Restaurants across the Northbay have opened their doors  24/7 to provide free meals, our evacuation sites are overflowing with volunteers, medical aid and supplies, first responders are working beyond exhaustion and people are opening their homes to others. For now, all of our schools in Sonoma County remain closed but we continue to be in touch with our students.

As we know, communities continue to be evacuated and there is still much uncertainty. Many of you have asked how to help. The Red Cross and evacuation sites need and will continue to need volunteers for some time. Also, there are several options if you would like to donate to the disaster relief efforts:
We will continue to hold everyone in our hearts, and please don't hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you.

With warm regards,

Kim Mazzuca,
President & CEO

Wildfire Smoke
Wildfire smoke can harm you in multiple ways. Smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases. This fact sheet tells you how you can protect your health and be safe if you are exposed to wildfire smoke.

What is Wildfire Smoke and Can it Make Me Sick?
Wildfire smoke is a mix of gases and fine particles from burning vegetation, building materials, and other materials. Wildfire smoke can make anyone sick. Even someone who is healthy can get sick if there is enough smoke in the air. Breathing in smoke can have immediate health effects, including:
  • Coughing
  • Trouble breathing normally
  • Stinging eyes
  • A scratchy throat
  • Runny nose
  • Irritated sinuses
  • Wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Headaches
  • An asthma attack
  • Tiredness
  • Fast heartbeat
Older adults, pregnant women, children, and people with preexisting respiratory and heart conditions may be more likely to get sick if they breathe in wildfire smoke.

Wildfire Smoke Can Affect High Risk Groups
Eight Tips for Protecting Yourself from Breathing Wildfire Smoke
If possible, limit your exposure to smoke. Here are eight tips to help you protect your health:
1.    Pay attention to local air quality reports . When a wildfire occurs in your area, watch for news or health warnings about smoke. Pay attention to public health messages and take extra safety measures such as avoiding spending time outdoors.
2.    Pay attention to visibility guides if they are available . Although not every community measures the amount of particles in the air, some communities in the western United States have guidelines to help people estimate air quality based on how far they can see.
3.    If you are told to stay indoors, stay indoors and keep your indoor air as clean as possible . Keep windows and doors closed unless it is very hot outside. Run an air conditioner if you have one, but keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside. Seek shelter elsewhere if you do not have an air conditioner and it is too warm to stay inside with the windows closed.
4.    Use an air filter . Use a freestanding indoor air filter with particle removal to help protect people with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory conditions and the elderly and children from the effects of wildfire smoke. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on filter replacement and where to place the device.
5.    Do not add to indoor pollution . When smoke levels are high, do not use anything that burns, such as candles and fireplaces. Do not vacuum, because vacuuming stirs up particles already inside your home. Do not smoke tobacco or other products, because smoking puts even more pollution into the air.
6.    Follow your doctor's advice about medicines and about your respiratory management plan if you have asthma or another lung disease . Call your doctor if your symptoms worsen.
7.    Do not rely on dust masks for protection . Paper "comfort" or "dust" masks commonly found at hardware stores trap large particles, such as sawdust. These masks will not protect your lungs from smoke. An "N95" mask, properly worn, will offer some protection. If you decide to keep a mask on hand, see the Respirator Fact Sheet provided by CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
8.    Avoid smoke exposure during outdoor recreation . Wildfires and prescribed burns-fires that are set on purpose to manage land-can create smoky conditions. Before you travel to a park or forest, check to see if any wildfires are happening or if any prescribed burns are planned.

-Dinner Volunteers Needed-

To Our Wonderful Volunteers of Catholic Charities,

Many of you provided amazing help serving meals to residents of our winter shelter program at Sam Jones Hall last year. We are excited to announce that those temporary winter beds have been converted to additional year-round beds for our clients with full supportive services for those who need our help getting back into homes of their own.

Since the expansion of our adult shelter, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to prepare, deliver, and serve meals to the individuals of our Sam Jones Hall residence. Dinner is served promptly at 6:00pm to residents, so volunteers should arrive no later than 5:00pm to drop off food, or begin preparation of serving.

We are currently looking for groups of 5-10 volunteers who are willing to provide, prepare, and serve meals to these individuals. Scheduling is flexible! If you feel that you d on't have time to make a meal at home but would like to volunteer to help serve dinner at the shelter, please contact Contact Noreen Mendoza to learn how to get involved. We are open to all and any volunteers interested in getting involved.

*CLICK HERE* to sign-up to prepare and provide a meal!
For more information about any of these opportunities OR general volunteering with dinner services you can reply to this e-mail, or contact Volunteer Coordinator Noreen Mendoza at  [email protected]  or call (707)528-8712 x160.

Thank you for sharing this with anyone who may be able to help make the lives brighter for those most in need,

When a child has an advocate, she is more likely to get needed services - and a permanent, stable home. Are you eager to make a difference in a child's life? Become a volunteer.

CASA is experiencing one of the largest numbers of referrals in 20 years, of abused and neglected children who are entering the child welfare system afraid and alone. CASA is seeking volunteers today. CASA has over 50 youth awaiting your friendship and advocacy, which can bring a life changing relationship to them, and the list continues to grow. As little as 10 hours a month can make a child's life brighter. Our Summer training begins October 5th. Visit  www.sonomacasa.org or call them at 565-6375.

CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are volunteers and ordinary citizens from our community, like you, doing extraordinary work. CASA advocates establish stable relationships with foster children, getting to know their unique history and making informed recommendations to the courts.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and  Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon

As always, thank you so much, sharing information about our Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program. Your connection with the people of Sonoma County and your ability and cooperative efforts to raise awareness of our program is truly appreciated. The CASA Program recruits and trains citizen volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. Becoming a CASA volunteer is an investment of time, energy and most importantly...heart. Not everyone is in a position to become a CASA volunteer, but everyone could support our program through an additional volunteer opportunity we are recruiting volunteers for! We would love to have your help sharing the word about it.

CASA has become an official charity partner of Destination Races and the next race is the Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon on October 28th in Healdsburg. We are very excited with this opportunity and are looking for volunteers to help with this event on our behalf. To sign up, volunteers should follow this link and choose CASA as their charity. Proceeds from this event will benefit our program.

We appreciate any help you are able to give us in sharing information about this volunteer need.
Thanks for supporting Sonoma County's foster children!
