Yesterday was a fun day to celebrate National School Lunch Week with #GreatAppleCrunch day, over 1 million students around the Great Lakes crunched into apples this afternoon! At HUHS, our students eat an average of 353 apples a day!! We caught some fun pictures of our students and staff enjoying their Michigan Apples. Click here to see some of the crunching fun:

Math Meet
Tuesday Evening, about 300 students visited HUHS to compete in math contests that included Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Math.  A huge shout out goes to Chris Dubnicka, Hartford's Math Team Adviser, for organizing this outstanding event. Arrowhead won the Varsity competition and Whitnall won JV. Hartford's JV top scorers were Laura Witt  and Grace McCune.  Hartford's top Varsity scorers were Andrew Jocham and Kiley Grinwald.
Chess Club
The HUHS Chess Club starting meeting at the beginning of October, and the small group of dedicated chess players need more students to make the club successful.  Most players are beginners when they join, and learn to improve their game quickly through lessons, coaching, and competition.

Until a couple of years ago, the Chess Club formed a top-ten state team for five years in a row, finishing as high as 2nd in the state.  The JV team won the state tournament five years in a row as well.

The club also plays in a 10-school division in head-to-head matches against other schools, and also tournaments where students play individually.

There are two state tournaments for the club:  The individual state championships called The Junior Open, are in November (4th and 5th this year), and the team state championships are in March (17th and 18th this year).

Many students who join in the 9th or 10th grade learn quickly to become good chess players, and get to play on the varsity team against other schools or at the state competitions.  We need new people to come and play for the team.  The club is flexible and doesn't have a very demanding schedule.

If any parents or students want more information, please email Mr. Hummel at dan.hummel@huhs.org.
 Horse & Companion Animals
Students got the chance to practice key canine grooming skills in Horse & Companion Animals this week, applying knowledge they've been developing in canine health, maintenance, behavior and handling. Student groups were responsible for trimming nails, cleaning ears, brushing teeth, grooming coats and practicing safe restraint techniques with their assigned dog. The US pet industry was valued at $67 billion in 2016 and many students in H&CA hope to find careers in the industry someday. Thank you to Jamie Lauer, Jamie Buedler, Melanie Axford and Ben Hoffman to bringing your dogs in for us for the day.

Culinary Arts 1
Students in Mr. Schmidt's Culinary Arts 1 participated in a juicing lab last week, while wearing their new school spirited chef hats! Students began by making orange juice and then created smoothies!  Click here  to see more pictures!

Forensic Anthropologist
Jessica Skinner (Mr. Weddig (Social Studies Teacher's wife) discussed her amazing career as a Forensic Anthropologist with students  on Friday . She brought some 3D printed replicas of the Home naledi fossil (an extinct human-like species) and made some real-life connections to what students have learned in Biology and BioMed classes.

Float Sink Float
In STEM, the students have been working on a Float, Sink, Float project where they had to create a prototype that would float for at least 5 seconds, sink to the bottom for at least 5 seconds, then float again for at least 5 seconds.  Their prototype had to use a physical and chemical change to accomplish this task.  Their learning was how they could change density to make something float or sink.

Grade School Cross Country Challenge
The Grade School Cross Country Challenge was a HUGE success this year! The weather wasn't the best, but 190 students came out to participate with our Cross Country team and coaches. Thank you to Ms. Helms for organizing and taking great photos!

Health Minute
Important Health Room Information

Parents and students are reminded that students should not be calling, texting or e-mailing their parents to leave the building.  If they are ill or need to leave for any reason, they must come to the Health Office or Attendance Office for a permit to leave.  If they leave without talking to a staff member and obtaining a permit, they are truant.

All students who carry asthma inhalers or Epi-Pens need a medical Individual Health Plan to be signed by their doctor and parent and returned to school as soon as possible.  These need to be redone yearly, this is a rule from the Department of Public Instruction.  Additional copies of the form can be found on the HUHS.org web site under District, Health Services, Forms section.   There are medication forms there as well for students who need to take medications at school.  Prescribed medications need a doctor and parent signature and must be stored in our Health Office and administered by Ms. Scholz.  Over-the-counter medications can be carried by the student, but must have a signed consent form with the pills in the original pill bottle (no pills dumped in a bag.)  Thank you for helping us keep your child safe at school.

SAVE THE DATE: FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATION

Financial Aid is provided for by the federal government, the State of Wisconsin, outside scholarship sources, and the college/universities themselves.   Most aid is based on financial need and is designed to help meet the difference between the cost of college and the student and family's ability to pay for the education.
HUHS will be hosting a presentation for college-bound students and their parents to learn about grants, loans, student employment, and scholarships on Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30pm.   A speaker from Moraine Park Technical College will be here to discuss the process of how families finance college costs through all the available options.   Senior students and parents should plan to attend!

COLLEGE APPLICATION TIP

Save the speech.  Tell the tale.   No need to stress out about the college application essay or be nervous if you think of it as a conversation or a story about yourself.  You aren't giving a speech to thousands of people but someone in the Admissions Office who really wants to hear it!    The essay is a story that means something to you and if you are able to convey that meaning to Admissions, you've done the job.

If you'd like help with your college essay, Mrs. Carter or Mr. Dobberstein are available in the Writing Center during 5th and 6th period.   Mr. Schliewe is available during Resource on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in Room 84.   All three are English teachers.
FRESHMEN CONFERENCE

HUHS counselors have begun freshman conferences this week and they will continue through the month of December. The purpose of the conference is for counselors to get to know students on an academic and personal level, as well as to begin a discussion about future career plans through Academic and Career Planning. HUHS counselors believe in forming and cultivating strong relationships with students so that we can best serve them during their high school career. Counselors will meet with students during a 45-minute period, making every effort to schedule students during a course period where they are excelling. Students will be notified of their conference time two days in advance. If you have any questions, please contact your child's counselor.

Athlete Of The Month for August and September
Andrea O'Bryon - August Athlete of the Month
Ethan Chivas - September Athlete of the Month

"Andrea O'Bryon provided the Girls Golf team with steady leadership over the past three years.  On and off the course, Andrea works hard to excel and is a positive example for all golfers.  Well Done!"
-Coach Matt Geracie
"Ethan Chivas unselfishly vacated his all conference OLB position to fill in another spot on our defense due to team-mate injuries and helped lead the varsity football team to a 6-1 start and a qualifying spot in the state football play-offs."
-Coach John Redders
