NORTH LAFOURCHE LEVEE DISTRICT IS MOVING FORWARD ON SEVERAL LEVEE AND DRAINAGE PROJECTS
*Lockport to Larose
Hurricane Protection Levee
* South Thibodaux Drainage
* Lake Bouef Watershed
The NLLD is working hard every day to improve levees and drainage systems in North Lafourche and protect our people, property and way of life. Following are a few updates on planned projects.
Lockport to Larose Hurricane Protection Levee
In 2013, the NLLD completed a project to raise a portion of the Lockport to Larose levee system to a height of nine feet above sea level from just east of the Edna Pump Station to the the Parr Pump Station, known as Reaches C1, C2 and C3. The District is now working to proceed with the next phase of this levee project from the Parr Pump Station to the private Arceneaux Pump Station.
In consideration of the appeals of the local residents and landowners during public project committee meetings, contributing factors of cost, and other future possible means of protection, the District is working to acquire donations of right-of-ways needed to improve this next section of the levee to a +7.5' elevation.

The northern section of the Lockport to Larose levee (C1, C2, C3) was upgraded to a nine-foot elevation in 2013. |
South Thibodaux Drainage
The NLLD expects to advertise for bid at the end of this year on a project to improve drainage in the southern area of the City of Thibodaux with the addition of a larger outfall channel.
This project was developed as a result of the East 7th Street Drainage Study and the Thibodaux Area Project Development & Evaluation recently completed by Leonard Chauvin P.E., P.L.S., Inc. for the District.
Lake Bouef Watershed Backwater Flooding Project
In 2012, Hurricane Isaac pushed record high water into the upper portions of the Barataria Basin and high water topped several backwater flood protection levees in the Lake Bouef Watershed, in the northern end of the North Lafourche Levee District.
The District has identified upgrades to backwater protection levees in this area as critical to improve protection for residents in the communities like Kraemer, Bayou Bouef, Choctaw, and Raceland.
The District has conducted two public informational workshops to help residents understand the enormous area encompassed by this basin, along with the drainage challenges, relative sea level rise, land subsidence, and the wetland and mitigation processes. NLLD staff and contractors have also made several field trips with landowners from the area to assess the concerns and observe the wetland/productive land interface.
Other small group meetings like this are expected to be scheduled in the coming months. Landowner understanding of the issues and challenges in the area will be essential in completing this project.
