Inglewood Stadium Ground Breaking

NFL 'couldn't be more excited' as
Rams break ground on Inglewood stadium complex

Sixty-ton dump trucks and skip-loader tractors lumbered around car-size dirt mounds as NFL officials and Inglewood leaders gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning at the 2019 home of the Los Angeles Rams.

Already, nearly 2 million cubic yards of earth have been moved to ready the 298-acre lot for development of Los Angeles' first built-to-order football stadium. When it's all done, officials say 8 million cubic yards of dirt will have been moved between Prairie Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, adjacent the Forum.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke and National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell joined Mayor James Butts and Hall-of-Famers Jack Youngblood and Eric Dickerson to ceremonially shovel some soil for above-ground construction at what is billed as much more than a $2.6 billion stadium. Current Rams Aaron Donald and Johnny Hekker also attended.

Rams Break Ground on $2.6 Billion Inglewood Stadium

T he Los Angeles Rams held a groundbreaking Thursday morning for the $2.6 billion Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and Inglewood Mayor James Butts made remarks at the ceremony. The stadium is expected to be completed for the 2019 football season and will host the 2021 Super Bowl.

Kroenke noted that the project will ultimately move 8 million cubic yards of dirt to make way for the stadium and its retail, residential and office components.

Stan Kroenke had dreamed of turning over this particular ceremonial shovelful of dirt ever since his first pre-dawn glimpse of this corner of Inglewood several years ago.

The real estate tycoon relished the thought of filling the largest block of contiguous unused land in the Los Angeles area with a lavish, career-defining stadium for his Rams. Under a brilliant Southern California sun Thursday, the team owner officially broke ground on the project with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts at his side.

"This was so impressive," Kroenke said, recalling his initial late-night visit to the site. "Honestly, I couldn't believe it existed. From my perspective, this should not exist... (And) there should not have been a market like the greater Los Angeles area with no NFL team."
