Three Police Officers Promoted within
Hillsborough Township Police Department

Veteran Officers Sworn in to Fill Vacancies

The Hillsborough Township Committee promoted three police officers from the Department to fill vacancies in the positions of Captain (1) and Lieutenant (2), at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

"There exists various vacancies within the Department and as a result of the vast experience base we have within the Police Department we are able to promote these officers to fill those vacancies," stated Committeeman Frank DelCore, Liaison to Public Safety.

Captain Charlie Boyle is a 23 year veteran of the Department. During his career he has worked in the Patrol Division as a Patrol Officer and the Services Division in the Training/Community Policing Unit. He was appointed Corporal in July of 2002 and after being promoted to Sergeant in April of 2007, he was transferred back to the Patrol Division. Captain Boyle later transferred to the Traffic Bureau in October 2014 and was assigned to the Patrol Division as Division Commander after being promoted to Lieutenant in February 2016.

Lieutenant Michael McMahon is a 20 year veteran of the Department. While an officer he has worked in the Patrol Division as a Patrol Officer and the Services Division in the Traffic Bureau. Lieutenant McMahon was appointed Corporal in July of 2009 and was transferred back to the Patrol Division. He was then promoted to Sergeant, Patrol Division in February of 2015. Lieutenant McMahon was later transferred to the Services Division, Training Bureau in March of 2016 and then the Traffic Bureau in February of 2017.

Lieutenant Sean Carolan is a 23 year veteran of the Department, who during his career worked in the Patrol Division as a Patrol Officer and in the Investigative Division. He was appointed to the position of Corporal in August of 1999, and promoted to Sergeant, Investigative Division in April of 2007. Lieutenant Carolan has also served as a Deputy Coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management since 2009.

"These promotions bring over 66 years of experience with them," added Committeeman Frank DelCore during the swearing in ceremony.

"It is with honor that we elevate these dedicated Officers to the positions of Lieutenant and Captain," concluded Committeeman DelCore.

All of the Officers were joined by their families, Chief of Police Powell, Committeemen and Liaisons to Public Safety Frank DelCore and Greg Burchette for the swearing in and pinning ceremony.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

The President of the United States, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers, and the National Cyber Security Alliance have declared October as National Cyber Security Month, a month dedicated to understanding and combating cyber threats to our individual and collective security and privacy.

"Hillsborough recognizes that it has a vital role to play in identifying, responding, and protecting against any cyber threats to the township and its residents. Having a month dedicated to learning about these new threats to our community is important for our wellbeing," commented Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley, Liaison to Information Technology.

The Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign has been designated as the National Public Awareness Campaign. It was created by a coalition of private companies, nonprofit and government agencies, and academic institutions to increase the understanding of cyber threats.

Hillsborough Goes Pink for Breast Cancer

Awareness Month

On Monday October 2, 2017, Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley, along with Hillsborough Township Municipal employees wore pink i n support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To further raise awareness, Joanne Liscovitz, with Dance for the Cure, a not for profit organization committed to the prevention and cure of breast cancer through the celebration of dance, put up pink ribbons around the Municipal Complex.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign aimed at increasing the awareness of the disease for both men and women. The goal is to help all people affected with breast cancer through early detection, education and different support services.

4th Annual HRC Fitness Charity 5K

On Sunday, October 1st, HRC Fitness held its 4th annual Charity 5K Run/Walk benefiting GiGi's Playhouse Hillsborough.

Along with the 5K race, the day's events included a walk, r efreshments , an awards ceremony, a fall festival and the "Dash for Down Syndrome" to support GiGi's Playhouse athletes and to raise awareness and acceptance for individuals with Down Syndrome.

Committeeman Frank DelCore and Committeeman Doug Tomson were in attendance to cheer on the runners and to do their part to help raise awareness for Down Syndrome.

Hillsborough Township Ranks Among
Best Places to Live and to Move to in New Jersey

NJ Monthly Releases 2017 Rankings, Placing Hillsborough in the top 10%

"Hillsborough Township was ranked the 46th best place to live in New Jersey out of 513 municipalities," announced Mayor Carl Suraci at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.

Hillsborough was ranked at 46th in 2017, climbing 43 spots from last year's rankings.

"It is my honor to announce this most recent recognition that Hillsborough Township has received," stated Mayor Carl Suraci.

NJ Monthly based its rankings off a number of different statistics and rankings including population, average property tax, crime rates, and school rankings. Hillsborough was ranked the 5th best place to live in Somerset County. Hillsborough was also recently ranked as the 47th best school system in the state.

Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade and Costume Contest at the Dog Park October 28th

The third annual Howl-O-Ween at the Ann Van Middlesworth Park Dog Park will feature a dog parade and costume contest. Registration is free and begins at 8:30 am on October 28th. The parade will begin at 9:00 am at the pavilion. There will be vendors, prizes, and fun for all!

Engineering Update

The Engineering Department would like to inform residents that New Amwell Road is in the process of being paved. The first phase, between Taurus Dr. and Route 206, will be paved this year. Phases 2 and 3, between Taurus Dr. and Beekman Ln., will be repaved during the spring of 2018. Residents who have planned utility changes are urged to arrange them as soon as possible. Utility hook-up usually requires an excavation of the roadway.

Girl Scout to Give Pollinator Garden Talk

Ambassador Girl Scout Brynne Briegs has created a pollinator garden at the Hillsborough Municipal Complex to expand the feeding and breeding area of bees and butterflies. This project was done in order for Brynne to obtain her Gold Award and her effect is visible; over fifty monarch caterpillars already call this garden home! Come learn how you can help out our pollinators during Brynne's Pollinator Talk at the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 6:30 PM in the side multi-purpose room in the Peter J. Biondi Municipal Building.

Friends of the Hillsborough Library Annual Book Sale

The Friends of the Hillsborough Library will host their annual used book and media sale at the Hillsborough Municipal Building. The huge selection includes recent used books for adults, children, and teens, as well as electronic media. Some of the categories of books for sale include: current fiction, sci-fi, romance, history, biography, sports, science, business, cooking, crafts, gardening, textbooks, reference, holiday, literature, self-help, and much more. There will be DVDs of movies and TV series for adults and children, as well as many music CDs, books on CD, and games. All proceeds of the sale support SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library branch.

The Hillsborough Township Police Department is again participating in "Operation Take Back", a program from the Drug Enforcement Administration, for residents to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired household medicine. If you have household medicine that you wish to dispose of, please come to the Municipal Complex between the listed hours.

Volunteers Needed for Fall Leaf Clean-up

Would you like to help an elderly or disabled person get his or her yard ready for the winter months?

The Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services is looking for volunteers for its annual fall leaf clean-up program. Volunteers are needed to rake leaves for elderly and disabled homeowners around the county who have no other means to do yard work.

The annual leaf clean-up project will take place Saturday, Nov. 18. However, anyone who would like to help but cannot make it on Nov. 18 is welcome to schedule an alternative date and time. For information and to sign up as a volunteer, call the Office of Volunteer Services at (908) 541-5715.

Make a Positive Impact at Leadership Somerset

Do you want to meet new people, learn about local programs and services and make a positive impact in the community? If so, Leadership Somerset may be for you. Our fellows have used their leadership skills and expertise to positively impact many nonprofit organizations, including the Adult Day Center of Somerset County, CASA SHaW (Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren), Middle Earth, SHIP (Samaritan Homeless Interim Program), the Agape House, the ARC of Somerset, and more.

Adults who live or work in Somerset County are invited to apply for the Leadership Somerset Class of 2018. The application deadline is Oct. 31. Adopt-A-Family Program to Aid Needy Residents

Somerset County Freeholder Patricia Walsh has announced the eighth annual Adopt-A-Family program that will help provide Thanksgiving meals for needy families, and extended thanks the hundreds of donors who have given generously in prior years.

"We often hear that people want to help others within their own community," she said. "This is a perfect way for residents to earmark donations to help feed needy families in their own or neighboring towns." The program has collected $96,103 in donations since its inception in 2010.

The estimated cost of a Thanksgiving meal is $40. Anyone wishing to donate may send a check to any of the following local programs:

You Have to 'Disconnect to Reconnect' -- Youth in grades 7-12. Register by Oct. 19

Somerset County teens in grades 7 to 12 are invited to attend Somerset County's 21st Annual Youth Conference Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. The theme this year is "Disconnect to Reconnect."

The conference will be held in Conference Room 1 of the Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren St., Somerville, N.J. 08876. Seating is limited to the first 70 registrants. The registration deadline is Oct. 19. No walk-ins will be permitted.

Admission is free with one can of food, which will be donated to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. Refreshments will be provided. Certificates will be awarded to participants for 2.5 hours of community-service learning.

Workshops on Domestic Violence & Teen Dating

Freeholder Brian D. Levine, human service liaison, wants to inform parents, caregivers and professionals who work with children and families about two different workshops that are being hosted by the Somerset County Office of Youth Services in October:

Drive-thru Flu Shot Clinic To Be Held October 14th

Residents, first responders are invited to consider this convenient option.

Somerset County adult residents age 18 and over to are invited to take advantage of a drive-thru flu-shot clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the South County Public Works Garage, 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844 .

The cost for the flu shot is $5 for the general public and free for emergency and first responders, with proper identification.
