October 2017

Dear Fourth Church Youth Volunteers,

A great big thanks to all of you who have led these first four weeks of Junior High, Senior High, and Confirmation, as well as our lock-in volunteers and Committee on Youth members who have launched the program year so well. Your effort, your flexibility, your interest in our youth--all of these qualities are in abundance among you all. Shelley, Katie, and I grow more excited every day to be working with all of you.

We had a great fall Confirmation retreat. Special thanks to Krirsten Almos, Karen Frank,
Luke Beasley, and Carole Bekken for their leadership!

Here's what's coming up in October :
  • October 8 is Chicago Marathon Sunday, so we expect attendance to be low. We will not have our regular Sunday morning gatherings but will instead run an All-Youth Get-Together in the Bumpus Room from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. If you can join us, please do. There is also a youth leader lunch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (more on that below).
  • October 15: The Junior High group starts a three-week series on women in the Exodus story by learning about Shiphrah and Puah, the Hebrew midwives; Senior Highs will be exploring Psalm 23 (Shelley will be in Cuba); and Confirmation will meet in Circle Groups for the first time! Rocky will be leading a parent meeting at 11:00 a.m.
  • October 22: Junior High is all about Moses's mom; Confirmation will be together in 5A for a keynote about Jesus' miracles; and Senior Highs will hear from the prophet Isaiah. (Shelley will be in Cuba this week too.)
  • October 29: Junior Highs will learn about Pharaoh's daughter, and Senior Highs about Moses and Martin Luther. Confirmation will gather in Circle Groups.
lunchSpeaking about that Youth Leader Lunch we have on our calendar. I did not account for the marathon when I scheduled this, and I have been hearing from people that it is very difficult to get to Fourth Church that morning. So, if you can be here for a lunch with your fellow youth leaders at 12:30 p.m., RSVP by emailing me, Rocky, so that we can have all the savories and sweets we need.

Finally, if you can help lead the Senior High Lock-In on Friday night, October 27, you won't regret it. We get food, play games, and generally enjoy the company of an energetic community of high school youth (we do sleep, too, btw). These events can't happen without leadership from church members--staff aren't enough. Please email Shelley if you think you might like to help out.

Grace and peace to you all this month.

In Christ,

Rocky
