What's Happening in North Smithfield
Message from Town Administrator
Gary Ezovski

"DID YOU KNOW?"

Most know that North Smithfield's population is near 12,000 people.  But do you know how many motor vehicles we have in town?

Who thinks we have less than 7,000?
Anyone think we have over 10,000?
Anyone guess there are over 15,000?
Or how about near 20,000?

The Water Department will conduct hydrant flushing in the Slatersville, Forestdale, Great Road, Mendon Road and the Industrial Park areas

Monday, Oct 16th through Friday, October 20th
8:00 PM until 3:00 AM
Flushing enhances the water quality for area residents and businesses.
Hydrant flushing may cause temporary reduction in water pressure throughout the water system. Some discoloration of water may occur. This is not harmful.
Department officials recommend limited water use during the flushing operation. This includes using water to wash clothes and dishes.
Check your water before use. If it is discolored, run the cold water until it clears.
For information call: the water department
at 767-2200, ext. 320 or ext. 305
between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM
Monday through Friday.

North Smithfield Yard Waste Changes - PICKED UP ONLY : NO MORE DROP-OFF

T he Town of North Smithfield's Fall curbside yard waste pick up season begins Tuesday October 10, 2017 with some new program changes to make handling yard waste easier for our town residents.

Monday October 16th, the highway garage will no longer accept yard waste dropped at the yard.

1.  Curbside Pickup -  No More Drop off at the Garage.  Our pickup season continues until Friday December 1, 2017.  "MTG is coming right to our resident's home, with the curbside pickup continuing past Thanksgiving.  Because of this, our highway garage will no longer accept yard waste dropped here at our facility. "

2.  The weekly collection limit is now relaxed.  This year, MTG Disposal, our contracted hauling company, will collect "reasonable" amounts of yard waste each week. This no longer limits the collection amount to a number cutoff of 8 (eight) bags or cans per week.

"We understand some weeks you have more yard waste than others. This new program allows flexibility to remove more yard waste on the weeks when the leaves are really coming down," explains Donna Kaehler, Recycling Coordinator.

This new program is designed to help residents since they no longer need to transport extra amounts of yard waste here to the Highway Garage. "We are happy to make things easier and more convenient for everyone.  People are busy and our yard waste crew is already at your home.  Let them pick up your weekly yard debris."

The garage has continually stated; yard waste is never permitted to be left outside in the parking lot. But if a resident is unaware or doesn't take notice to the many signs, they are illegally dumping and will be contacted and required to come and remove any items left.

Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as your trash and recycling, but in a separate collection truck.  Place your yard waste in brown biodegradable lawn bags or loose in cans that are clearly marked.   Small bundles of branches less than 3 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter are also allowed, but stumps and trees do not fall in this requirement.

All yard waste we collect is processed into compost. Nothing can be accepted in plastic bags, and please do not mix trash, dirt, or stones in. It will contaminate the compost process.

The highway garage will continue to be open on Saturdays from 9 am - 3 pm through the Fall season. This allows our town residents to bring scrap metal, rigid plastic and mattresses for recycling.  Last year alone, NS residents recycled 150,000 pounds or 75 tons in these programs.
