Study Reveals Work and Education Relationships*
 
 
A recently released survey from the University of Phoenix finds the majority of working adults view college and education as a way to improve their careers. The online survey of more than 1,000 adults who are employed at least 20 hours a week found that:
 
  • 38% are "very" satisfied with their current employed position.
  • 43% indicated they were "very" satisfied with how their skills and abilities were being utilized by their employers
  • 46% said they were "fairly" compensated for their occupational roles.
  • 37% stated they were "very satisfied" with their career path
  • 65% anticipate their salary would increase if they attained a higher level of education

Federal Reserve Study Shows Post Great Recession Wage Gainers*
 
With the Great Recession in the rear view mirror, the Federal Reserve is reporting that nearly all Americans have emerged from that period of economic downturn with more money. Most notable among the gain are African American and Hispanic families and Americans without college degrees showing the greatest increases.

Sounding Off About Personal CPC and CTS Certification
 
 
 
Search and staffing professionals can become advocates for the Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC) and Certified Temporary Staffing-Specialist (CTS) credential they have earned by practicing the following:
  1. Placing the CPC or CTS designation following their names on business cards, emails, letters, contracts and related communication strategies.
  2. Indicating certification status of staff members on firm Internet sites that profile team members, including a statement that the CPC and CTS are official certifications of the National Association of Personnel Services.
  3. Referring candidates and clients to the National Center for Certified Staffing Industry Professionals (NAPS) at http://www.nrcsip.com where they can learn more about CPC and CTS certification.

A study, American Working Conditions Survey, released by the Rand Corporation just prior to Labor Day paints a picture of the American workplace that is stressful, hazardous and sometimes hostile, as evidenced by intolerable harassment and bullying conditions.

Worker Burnout ~ Why Americans Lead the Way*

 
The America Online Finance blog devoted a recent feature to the propensity of the American worker to burnout faster than their global counterparts. Brad Stulberg, coauthor of "Peak Performance: Elevate your Game, Avoid Burnout and Thrive with the New Science of Success" is featured on the video portion of the blog message and attributes the burnout problem to the amount of time Americans work and our inability to distance life and work at other times.

Numbers Count ~ Americans Holding Second Job Highest in 20 Years*
 
The U.S. Department of Labor is reporting that 7.6 million workers held multiple jobs in late summer, up 2% from 7.4 million in July 2016. The current "moonlighting" figure is the highest in 20 years.

Jillian Smiley Honored at Denver as Scholarship Recipient
 
Frank Burtnett & Jillian Smiley at the 2017 NAPS Annual Conference 
Jillian Smiley, recruiter at Pathfinders, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, was honored at a NAPS Conference luncheon in September as the first recipient of the Frank Burtnett Education Scholarship. The FBES was created by the NAPS Board of Directors in 2016 to recognize the contributions of the education and certification consultant who has worked with NAPS since 1995. Jillian participated in the Denver Conference and Certification Immersion Class and earned her Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC) certificate.

Earnings of Foreign Workers in U.S. On the Rise*
 
According to the Pew Research Center, U.S. employers planned to pay high-skilled foreign workers with H-1B visas a median salary of $80,000 a year in fiscal year 2016, up from about $69,000 a decade earlier.

A story on the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) travel blog asks a very interesting question--- Why are Americans not taking their full complement of vacation time? The workforce, according to AARP in the last part of the last century reported taking an average of three to four work weeks per year. Beginning in 2000, that number began ticking down. And down. And down. By 2015, Americans were using an average of 16 vacation days a year - nearly a full workweek less than the long-term average. The AARP blog story asked if Americans are fearful of being away from their jobs and why?

Answer: Yes, formal staff development education and training addressing matters that will improve the knowledge and/or skillset of the search or staffing professional can be applied to the NAPS continuing education maintenance requirement.
