 About the Media Corps

The Media Corps is a component of the work of our 4-H Junior Superintendent Program. Junior Superintendents are 4-H'ers who have applied to work at the fair in Youth Leadership positions throughout the 4-H Youth Building and the Fairgrounds. While on assignment for Media Corps, they will be reporting on their observations and experiences as 4-H Youth at the Fair. This newsletter represents their perspectives on the events and daily happenings while they are here.

State Fair Fun from the 4-H Building
Freya Birkas-Dent

The State Fair is a place where many people meet to have fun, enjoy NY state products and enjoy unhealthy food. In the 4-H building, the view is a little bit different. Youth from different counties across New York State come to show the best of the best of projects that have been completed throughout the previous year. It is a time for each county to show the public, as well as the rest of the 4-H community, what they have been up to and the progress that is being made.

Assisting with Evaluation
Being a judges assistant gives teens the opportunity to see the judging process in action and see the thought consideration that goes into each ribbon awarded. Sometimes, very special exhibits come through showing what true dedication looks like. I remember vividly looking through a young woman's family history project in which she traced her relatives hundreds of year back. She even visited graves sites of various relatives, taking photographs and drawing maps of cemetery layouts.

Fair Watcher
Another aspect of the youth building is the constant ebb and flow of fairgoers, presentations, fashion shows, cooking competitions, and everything in between. The youth building provides an opportunity for everyone to get their hands dirty, have some fun and learn about what the youth in the state are up to.

Governor Cuomo Opens the State Fair
Clyde Van Dyke

I had the wonderful experience of watching the governor, Andrew Cuomo, cut the ribbon commencing this year's state fair. This was signifiant because Cuomo revealed future plans for the fair during his speech. He informed the audience that there is a new Exhibition Building that will be completed BEFORE next year's state fair. Additionally, more developments are being put into work that will be beneficial to the vendors and visitors and will boost tourism.
VIPs to tour 4-H Youth Building Today
Several visitors from Cornell University expected to visit State Fair Thursday

On the 'official' opening day of fair, the youth building can expect several important visitors from Cornell University. Dr. Alan Matthios, Dean of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell will tour the grounds and visit the youth building in the morning. Additionally, Dr. Chris Watkins, Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension, will list the youth building with a team from the Extension Office.

Junior Supervisors will be leading tours and conducting interviews with these guests for future newsletter articles.
