From the director...
Racism is heavy on our minds as we debate monuments, hate groups, freedom of expression, humor, values, and white privilege. Recent horrific events have heated the arguments over who we are as a nation and who we should aspire to be.
Libraries have not been exempt from fostering segregation and racism. For hundreds of years, libraries were reserved for the wealthy, privileged few. Just a few decades ago, there were libraries that refused cards to people of color. Rep. John Lewis recently recounted how he and his siblings were turned away from their local library and refused cards because they were "colored." Lewis was invited back to that library years later, after he had written his book, to conduct a book signing. He did just that, and afterwards, they gave him his library card. He eloquently stated: "We may have all come to this country on different ships, but we are all in this boat together now."
In the midst of the chaos around us, let's learn from our troubled past and move to a discussion on what connects us. Practicing simple acts of listening, compassion, kindness and generosity may unite those that only see separation. Reserve judgement. Open your ears and your hearts. We need one another.
