Tony deBrum, champion of action on climate change and nuclear abolition, dies
On October 28, 2015, Beyond Nuclear was honored to be the presenter of the Nuclear-Free Future Award (NFFA) to Tony deBrum, Former Republic of the Marshall Islands Foreign Minister. Tony worked tirelessly to bring the world's attention to the deadly legacy of the  67 U.S. atomic bomb tests over the RMI and became a leading voice in calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Recently, deBrum had helped lead two law suits against nuclear weapons countries. He also played a pivotal role in securing the Paris Climate Accord, and dedicated his recent years to the crisis of climate change, already being felt on his low-lying islands. We are now saddened to report that Minister deBrum, 72, died August 22 at his Majuro home surrounded by family. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, deBrum won the Right Livelihood Award (pictured) in the same year he was honored by the NFFA. The Adam Horowitz film, Nuclear Savage, highlights much of deBrum's investigative work on the horrifying health consequences to Marshall Islanders during the 12 the years of atomic bomb tests there. John Oliver's right to ask "Why do we not have a nuclear toilet?" Take action against the proposed Yucca Mountain, Nevada radioactive waste dump!
Comedian John Oliver, host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight," on Sunday asked many good questions regarding the radioactive waste dilemma, but unfortunately missed the mark when it came to recommendations about what to do. He well described the absurdity of the problem, whether the radioactive waste originated from the nuclear weapons complex, or commercial nuclear power industry. But regarding the illusion of a solution that the nuclear establishment in government and industry has floated for a generation (an excuse it has used to keep generating radioactive waste ad nauseum), Oliver said "Maybe Yucca is the best place to store our growing supply of radioactive garbage; maybe it's not." A thousand environmental groups have joined with the State of Nevada and Native Community Action Council for a generation, to oppose the treaty-violating, scientifically unsuitable, environmentally unjust, non-consent-based Yucca dump scheme, which would launch thousands of Mobile Chernobyls onto the roads, rails, and waterways of most states. Please contact your U.S. Rep. (enter your zip code and click GO) and urge opposition to H.R. 3053, the pro-Yucca dump Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017. And contact both your U.S. Senators, to urge opposition to Trump's pro-Yucca dump Nuclear Regulatory Commission nominees, Annie Caputo and David Wright. (Or get patched through via the U.S. House and Senate Switchboards at (202) 225-3121, and (202) 224-3121, respectively.) More
Another major delay on Canada's Great Lakes shoreline radioactive waste dump is announced. Help block it once and for all!
Beyond Nuclear was honored and privileged to be invited, by the Great Lakes Environmental Alliance, to speak at the 3rd Annual Rally to Protect the Great Lakes in Port Huron, Michigan on Aug. 20. A day later, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) announced that -- instead of an impending CEAA summary report due out any day, enabling Canada's Environment and Climate Minister, Catharine McKenna, to make a yes or no decision by this autumn on Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) proposed Lake Huron shoreline radioactive waste dump (see photo, right) -- an open ended request for additional information has been issued to OPG, representing an indefinite long-term delay in the construction and operating license application proceeding. This is in regards to the Saugeen Ojibwe Nation's (SON) position on the matter, given the First Nation's immediate proximity to the proposed nuke waste dump targeted at the indigenous peoples' traditional lands, already unwilling "host" to the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station in Kincardine, Ontario. We need to use this latest, major delay to block OPG's Deep Geologic Repository (DGR, or DUD, short for Deep Underground Dump), once and for all! Please join the 16-year long grassroots campaign to stop this insane risk to the drinking water supply of 40 million people in eight states, two provinces, and a large number of Native American First Nations. Visit Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump's website, sign its petition, and help get a resolution passed in your town. Visit the website of SOS Great Lakes, and write to Canadian decision makers (yes, even if you are an American). And please spread word about this good news, and encourage others to take action too!
