A Note from the Principal

As Homecoming Week comes to a close, it provides an opportunity to reflect upon the many opportunities that our high school provides and that students participate in. Homecoming week is filled with wonderful
activities that bring an excitement and energy to our school.

We kicked off the week with a concert from our award winning Hayes Choir. The Harlem Wizards challenged (and beat) our Delaware teaching and administrative staff in a fun-filled basketball game at Hayes. Students dressed up all week in thematic clothes for our "Wizard of Oz" Homecoming theme. The annual PowderPuff game took place on Wednesday evening with a large crowd of students, parents and community members.

Our Pep Rally is Friday afternoon with the Homecoming game and Court announcements on Friday night.

Our Homecoming Dance is Saturday evening in the Hayes Gymnasium. This has been a great week, with lots of school spirit. Thank you for all of your support of Delaware Hayes and all of our many student opportunities.

Health News:
Ohio Law requires that all students enrolled in the Twelfth Grade have a Meningitis (Menactra) vaccine.  The state requires 2 Meningitis vaccines or one if it was given after the 16th birthday.

If your child does not provide this documentation to the school by Wednesday, September 13th, he or she will be excluded from extracurricular activities such as drama or musical productions, sports teams, any clubs and the Homecoming Dance.

If your student has not yet received these shots please schedule to have that done as soon as possible. You can check the Delaware General Health District website at Delawarehealth.org to see the schedule of vaccination clinics, or call them at (740) 368-1700 to make an appointment.  If you choose not to have your child vaccinated please sign the enclosed waiver form and return it to the school as soon as possible.

Please call Shasta McKee, Hayes Clinic Nurse at 740-833-1019 with any questions you may have.

Counseling News

Quarter 1 Grades & Report Cards - The end of first quarter is October 19, 2017.  Report cards will not be mailed home.  Grades are viewable online on Powerschool at any time from any internet accessible device. Report cards may also be printed from Powerschool.   If you need your log-in information, please contact the school at  740-833-1028.

Families no longer need to wait until the end of the quarter to follow their student's progress.  Our goal is to provide access to you 24/7 so that we may partner to ensure your student's success.  The benefit of this is to catch early signs that a student may be struggling, identifying missed assignments/exams and contacting a specific teacher about any questions.

Info. on Delaware Area Career Center (DACC)

Your sophomore attended a Delaware Area Career Center presentation during their House period (September 29). DACC is excited to welcome all Delaware Hayes sophomores as they tour the campuses and spend time in two hands-on programs on Monday, November 20! Below are a few quick highlights of what your student heard during the presentation.
- DACC is an off-site elective option offered through your school district. Students who attend DACC are still students of Delaware Hayes High School

- All families are invited to attend the DACC Open House on January 25th from 5-7pm.

 - Students who attend DACC earn required elective credits. They also have the opportunity to earn college credits and industry credentials based on the program they choose.

 - DACC students can absolutely attend DACC and still take advantage of AP classes and College Credit Plus.

 - DACC students are still part of their high school. They can take part in extracurricular activities and they still graduate from their high school.

 - DACC students spend half of their day in a special interest, hands-on lab surrounded by other students who have opted in to being there and have similar career goals.

 - Each DACC program gives students the foundational knowledge to launch a number of careers. College is expensive and we want students to graduate from high school with the confidence and clarity to know they are choosing the right major and/or entering the right career.

 - Most importantly, every family is unique, so we are more than happy to answer any questions you have along the way.
As we get closer to your child's tour of the Delaware Area Career Center and questions arise, feel free to refer to their website ( www.DelawareAreaCC.org) or contact Mary Siekman, DACC Enrollment Coordinator ( [email protected]), to learn more about the different program offerings and how they could relate to your students' interests.

A Note from the Attendance Office

Importance of School Attendance

School Attendance Matters!
Regular school attendance is important for student success. When a student is absent from school, even if excused for legitimate reasons, it can have a negative
impact on academic success and graduation rates.

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, the state legislature has mandated changes in how schools work with families on absenteeism. Districts are now required to
track attendance by hours not days. Parents will continue to receive notification letters when students miss the
equivalent of 5 or more days (excused or unexcused) of school. If a student continues to miss instructional time, the school may be required to schedule a family meeting to develop an attendance plan.

DCS is committed to helping students succeed and good school attendance is an important factor for academic success. The attached flyer can help your child/family
develop good attendance habits. Please reach out to your child's teacher or school principal if you have concerns about your student's absences. Click on the link below for some important highlights regarding attendance.

Calling a student off from School

Hello Parents/Guardians!

Here's a gentle reminder that if a student is being called off from school or you are wanting to pick them up early, the communication needs to be initiated by a parent/guardian as soon as possible.  Also, if you are sending someone else to pick up your student early, you will need to call the high school ahead of time to indicate who you are sending to pick up the child.

Lastly, if a student is sick or calls/texts you claiming to be sick, please direct your student to visit the school nurse.
