Matt's Corner:
You Don't Know Squat! Part 2

Recently, I have been asked several questions on how to properly execute a squat. Besides the deadlift, I have seen more injuries occur with the latter than any other exercise. Over the past few years, information on how to perform the squat safely has gotten better, but there is always room for improvement. Typically when an injury has occurred, the lumbar spine and knees take the bulk of the punishment. However, lately, the majority of the questions I hear are what to do with the neck and where to look when squatting. This concerns me because if you think lumbar pain is excruciating, try herniating a disc in an area that controls how you speak and eat.
A few months ago I explained lower body mechanics regarding squats and how to properly rise out of a seated position. For this article, the focus will be on upper body mechanics with the primary goal of learning proper neck position.
