Navigating the Modern World Can Be Difficult for Our Students.
PCEF Donors Want To Help.
The sad events in September of 2016 brought our students' mental health to the forefront of the conversation in Park City. Not surprisingly, PCEF received several mindfulness and resilience Teacher Grant requests later that fall. These ranged from student mindfulness training in school to Professional Development for school counselors, nurses and other key PCSD personnel.
Fortunately, thanks to you, our donors, we were able to fund $22,000 of those grant requests.
This year, PCEF has funded two pilot programs: Mindfulness Certification and Facilitation for teachers at Ecker Hill Middle School, and Restorative Justice teacher training at Treasure Mountain Junior High. Along with the district, we will watch and assess how effective those programs are, with the hopes of scaling up to include more schools.
In addition, we are in our third year of funding the Mustang Afterschool Academy (MASA) at Treasure. This program gives students a safe place to be after school, and allows students to direct the activities. Last year gave rise to the DJ Club, RC Club, Improv, and more. The best part is that that the students and teachers develop trusting relationships outside of a typical classroom setting.
Along with our community, PCEF feels that students learn best when they have the skills to cope with today's world. This fits with our underlying goal of going beyond what public education provides to meet the needs of our students, teachers, and community.

We ask every parent to give just $1 per school day, or $180 per student. Every child is enriched by PCEF programs.
2) Is it required?
No, but collectively your $180 helps fund nearly 100 programs going beyond the public education budget. For instance, there would be no EVA (Elementary Visual Art) or One Book One Community without your donations to PCEF.

Donor Spotlight: Katherine and Craig Hoggan
|
|
|
Katherine and Craig Hoggan have been long-time supporters of PCEF. Katherine has been Board President, and chair of several grant and assessment committees. Craig has worked the phones during Phone-a-thon, been on the #1 fundraising RWE team, and helped with legal counsel. Together they've been Red Apple Gala sponsors.
Katherine followed her family to Park City, and met Craig here. They love raising their son, Andrew, in Park City, both for the outdoor lifestyle and great schools. Katherine is a licensed professional therapist, in private practice for over twenty years.
"I became involved with PCEF because I could see the difference they were making in our schools. I was excited by the fact that I could make an immediate impact on our students and teachers with my time and our family's donations.
"However, as a Licensed Mental Health Therapist, I have been most proud of PCEF's response to our student wellness crisis last fall. PCEF was able to fund over $20,000 in student and teacher mindfulness trainings and offerings to several schools through our Teacher Grants last year. This year, PCEF is funding Mindfulness Certification for teachers at Ecker Hill. At Treasure Mountain, we are funding two programs that help with student wellness, Restorative Justice and the Mustang Afterschool Academy.

"I have always loved being in school. As a child in a military family, school was a constant for me even if we were living in a new place. I knew my teachers cared about me and I wanted to make them proud each time we worked together.
"Providing that environment and support for students is what drew me into education as a profession. To this day, the part of teaching I cherish the most is building relationships with my students.
"PCEF makes it possible for us to create original programming specific to the needs of our students, such as the Mustang Afterschool Academy (MASA) program and Restorative Practices. Both of these programs provide positive environments and practices for our junior high students to feel empowered and build relationships with their teachers. It is so critical at this age to reach students where they are.
"PCEF makes it possible for educators to truly live with a 'dream big' attitude when it comes to innovative ideas in the classroom and school.
