Culture Days 2017
Thank you to all who participated in the eighth annual edition of Culture Days in Durham Region. This annual weekend celebration of culture and the arts was once again a great success! The event is an opportunity to share the enormous talent, creativity, cultural spirit and passion that exists across this great region. In 2017, over 30 local artists and organizations held free, interactive events, introducing residents and visitors to the talented artists, musicians, creators, and historians of Durham. If you've never experienced Culture Days, consider participating in this one-of-a kind event in 2018, promoting your creative and engaging arts and culture events, attractions and initiatives.

Celebrate Ontario Public Library Week with the Whitby Public Library Perks Program!
The Whitby Public Library has partnered with the Downtown Whitby Business Improvement Area (BIA) to celebrate Ontario Public Library Week. When you shop and dine at participating locations in downtown Whitby from October 15 to 21, be sure to bring your Whitby Public Library card. Simply show your card to receive a discount or special offer.

Indigenous Culture Fund programs now open
The Ontario Arts Council's Indigenous Culture Fund (ICF) supports First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, culture and way of life. The fund provides Ontario-based Indigenous organizations, groups and individuals grants for arts, community and culture projects, available through three funding programs:
- Short-term grants: Ontario-based Indigenous organizations, groups and individuals can apply for grants of up to $5,000 for short-term community, culture and way-of-life projects in Ontario. First-time applicants, youth and elders are all encouraged to apply. This program accepts applications year round.
- Project Grants for Individuals, Groups and Collectives: This program supports larger community, culture and way-of-life projects in Ontario, with up to $30,000 for short-term projects and up to $60,000 for long-term projects. Ontario-based Indigenous organizations, groups and individuals should apply by 1 p.m. on November 1.
- Project Grants for Organizations: This program supports Indigenous community, culture and way of life projects in Ontario undertaken by Indigenous organizations, with up to $60,000 for short-term projects and up to $120,000 for long-term projects. Project grants are open to Ontario-based Indigenous organizations ----including not-for profits, schools, service organizations, community centres, councils and more. The application deadline is 1 p.m. on November 1.

Spots still available for Corporate Sponsorship Revenue Generation Workshop
Sport Durham and Central Counties Tourism are hosting a Corporate Sponsorship Revenue Generation Workshop on October 19. This training will focus on strategies to maximize revenue for regional events and sport hosting, lowering the financial burden for host cities.
Training concepts include:
- How to drive paid attendance.
- Corporate sponsorship contribution.
- Effective event marketing.
- Digital media with a purpose.
- Sales and negotiation training.
The workshop goal is to empower staff, leading to an increase in overall revenue generated from event and sports hosting. The training will help participants to grow confidence in bidding for events and provide an open resource for municipalities.
The workshop is one full day at the Ajax Convention Centre (located at Highway 401 and Salem Road); as well as post-training access to 10 weekly webinars. The cost is $25 per person, and includes light breakfast, breaks and lunch. Student pricing of $18 is also available.

Ontario making communities and attractions more bike-friendly
Ontario's Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport recently announced they are making it easier for people to ride their bikes to their favourite local tourism and cultural attractions with new funding for bike parking and storage. The ministry launched a new program, part of Ontario's Climate Action Plan, which will provide funding to support bike parking options like rings and racks, as well as outdoor lockers and bike storage rooms. Visitors to the province's tourism and cultural attractions will be able to stay active and choose clean transportation to their destination. The program also supports the goals of Tour by Bike, the province's first cycling tourism plan. All tourism and cultural attractions will be eligible to apply for funding. Keep these upcoming sport events on your radar!
Take advantage of Sport Durham's monthly sport events radar to ensure that your business is prepared to welcome incoming athletes and visitors to Durham Region during key sport events!
Keep the following events on your radar for this month:
- Overdrive Race & Relay Series, Duathalon Day and Multisport Day: Sprint (draft legal) and standard distance duathalons, cycling events and trail races, at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Clarington from October 28 to 29. Approximately 200 participants are expected over the course of the weekend.
- 2017/18 Eastern Regional Quidditch Championship, at the Civic Recreation Complex, Oshawa on November 11 and 12. Approximately 300 athletes are scheduled to attend.

Save the Date! Sport Durham Convergence set for December 7
Please mark your calendars for this year's Sport Durham Convergence! This annual sport tourism industry event will be held at the
Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex
on December 7. It will provide stakeholders with the opportunity to share experiences, learn about industry best practices, receive important updates, and network with one another. This year, we are excited to welcome students from the Durham College Sport Management program who will be on hand to present the results of their research projects on sport trends in Durham Region.
