ENDOWMENT ANNOUNCEMENT


Lakshmi Mittal and his family have announced a  $25 million gift to establish an endowed fund for this institute. In recognition of the Mittal Foundation's generosity, the center is now the  Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute at Harvard University.

Congratulations to Sunil Amrith, the Mehra Family Professor of South Asian Studies at Harvard, on the fantastic achievement of a  MacArthur Foundation Fellowship . The $625,000 award is given to 24 'geniuses' every year.

India's Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs delivered the 2017/18 Mahindra Lecture, given in honor of the late Harish C. Mahindra, a distinguished alumnus of Harvard College and a visionary leader of business and industry in India.

Professor Ishtiaq Ahmed, Stockholm University, on  the communal violence experienced during the transfer of power to Indian and Pakistani governments, specifically examining the situation which prevailed in the Punjab. Ahmed will present an analysis based on empirical evidence and a Theory of Ethnic Cleansing to shed light on how and why the Punjab was bloodied (March 1947), partitioned (End of March to 17 August 1947) and cleansed.
