ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL LETTER

Hello Everyone!

I hope you have all had a great start to the school year! I am so excited to be in my new position.
I have loved being able to see all of the kiddos each day. I went from having 28 students to over 400 students! I have never had so many hugs and felt so loved! Thank you for all of your support for me in this new role. I could not have asked for a better start to the school year.

During these first two weeks we have already done so much! Here are a few highlights:
  • Students were introduced to our new school-wide rules: Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful.
  • Our middle school is getting off to a great start! Students are extremely excited about their electives and their privilege of sitting outside in the "middle school commons" for lunch.
  • Our new Preschoolers and Kindergarteners are very excited to be welcomed into the WCA family. They are learning the procedures and ways of the school very quickly!
  • The eclipse was such an amazing experience for not only our students, but also our staff members! It was so much fun to watch the excitement it brought to our school community! A once in a lifetime experience for sure!
Thank you so much for all of your continued support for our WCA family! I feel very honored to be a part of such an amazing community!  Have a great rest of your week!

Sam Tracy
Assistant Principal

GIFTED CORNER

Battle of the Books
WCA would love to try to compete in the Douglas County Libraries Battle of the Books this year.  It is a fantastic opportunity for voracious readers in grades 3-6 to battle with knowledge and
share their love of reading. There is a commitment to participating in multiple matchups between
January 29 and March 14 . Additional details will be shared after Labor Day.
Please contact Kate Parker
if your child would like to participate.

Cognitive Abilities Testing
Students in grades 3 and 6 will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 7). This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. The test is comprised of three subsections: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal.
The testing will take place between the dates of  August 29 and September 15 as scheduled
by classroom teachers.

FROM THE DESK OF THE SOCIAL WORKER

Welcome back to school! We are excited to have students back after a long summer break. To set the tone for a safe and healthy school year, we invite you to join us in implementing the Student Wellness & Prevention Framework this year. WCA values the safety and well-being of each student. In fact, we know that before we can create an environment conducive to learning, our students must feel safe, secure, and supported. That is why we have developed an innovative Student Wellness & Prevention Framework to proactively address:
  • bullying
  • substance abuse
  • suicide and
  • school violence
We hope to build our students' tool box so that they can easily recognize when they or a friend need help and they know just where to go to get the help they seek.

Each month, our school staff will focus on a new topic and/or set of skills. This month we are introducing the purpose of the Student Wellness & Prevention Framework and Anonymous Reporting to our students. We are ensuring that students and parents have access to a wide range of supports and resources in the community. These resources are the first step in teaching students "when they need help and where to get help" and how to anonymously report should they see or hear something that might jeopardize a student's individual safety or the  safety of others.

Based on students' development levels, we will be exploring these two topics with students:
  • Elementary school students will learn about Safe2Tell, a program to help students learn what to look for, listen for, and what to report.
  • Middle School students will review resources such as Safe2Tell and Text-A-Tip which are available 24/7 so that they always have an anonymous way to report concerns.
Keep an eye out for next month's topic: Acceptance and Appreciation of Self and Others.
Your child's safety is of the utmost importance, and WCA will do all we can to support every student's well-being. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to the School Social Worker, Lindsay Wonstolen.

Please consider the resources listed below.
