City of Fort Lauderdale Joins the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Building Challenge; Commits to Aggressive Energy Efficiency Goal
Fort Lauderdale joins other leading local governments saving money and energy, creating jobs
The City of Fort Lauderdale has joined the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings Challenge (BBC), a leadership initiative designed to improve the energy efficiency of the nation's buildings, plants and homes by 20 percent in the next decade.
The City has already set energy reduction goals as outlined in their Fast Forward Vision Plan, Press Play Strategic Plan, and Sustainability Action Plan. For the BBC, the City has committed to reducing energy usage by 20 percent across approximately 2 million square feet of its building space by 2020. In addition, Fort Lauderdale is committing to reduce the energy used by its streetlights and water and waste water treatment facilities.
"As a new Better Buildings Challenge partner, Fort Lauderdale now joins other community leaders to create and share real solutions that reduce energy and water consumption, create jobs and save money," said Kathleen Hogan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency at the U.S. Department of Energy. "The Department of Energy looks forward to supporting the City of Fort Lauderdale every step of the way."
With multiple energy efficiency initiatives already in place, the City of Fort Lauderdale has already taken great strides towards becoming a more sustainable community. By joining the Better Buildings Challenge, the City has bolstered its sustainability strategy to meet ambitious energy-efficiency goals across its buildings and city-wide infrastructure.
Fort Lauderdale joins 44 other cities and counties nationally that have committed to the Better Buildings Challenge.

- Oakland Park Boulevard - Sign in at Earl Lifshey Ocean Park located at the end of Oakland Park Boulevard, east of A1A. Limited parking is available at the lot on the S.E. corner of A1A and Oakland Park Boulevard.
- Hugh Taylor Birch State Park - When you arrive at the gate, tell park personnel you are participating in the Coastal Cleanup. Sign in near the tunnel entrance to the beach. Walk into the pavilion and the sign-in table is to your right.
- Fort Lauderdale Beach - Registration table is at South Beach Park, at the picnic tables north of the restrooms. Parking passes are available at the table for parking only at the Intracoastal Lot (S. Birch Road and Las Olas Boulevard).
The Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, takes place in over 104 countries around the world.

One Event: 650 New Trees in our Neighborhoods; Proper Fertilizing Important
The City's July 22nd Free Tree Giveaway Event at Holiday Park was a great success with over 650 trees given to our neighbors for planting to enhance our tree canopy.
Growing our green canopy is without a doubt the longest running sustainability effort by the City of Fort Lauderdale.
As you fertilize your trees and lawn, please keep in mind that if too much fertilizer is applied to landscapes, it seeps past the root zone of the grass, plants or trees and into the aquifer, or it runs off into our canals, lakes and rivers. Avoid weed-and-seed products, use slow-release fertilizers, and fertilize lawns, trees and plants only to maintain health. Fertilizer will not help poor growth caused by poor plant placement, disease or pests.
Furthermore, while these chemicals may kill pests and weeds, they also poison fish and beneficial insects, and harm animals up the food chain that eat them. Fertilizers can actually help non-native plants grow and take over habitats.

Let's Make it a Vision ZERO School Year
Students are back in school for another year of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Some are attending school for the very first time, and some are beginning their journey to independence as first-time college students.
Wherever they're heading, it's an exciting time for our youth, but with the new school year, s
chedules change, homework is back on the "to do" list, school buses are traveling in neighborhoods picking up kids at bus stops, and our streets are busier.
Slowing down, paying attention, and sharing the road is more important than ever, especially during these first few weeks as everyone is adjusting to the new school year.
The City wants to help make the transition into the new school year smoother for everyone.
As part of our Vision Zero Fort Lauderdale initiative to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our streets to zero, we're sharing some Back-to-School Street Safety Tips to help prevent crashes and keep everyone safer on our streets this year.
It's up to all of us to keep our kids safe, and their parents, caretakers, bus drivers, and teachers too. Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among young children in the United States, but we can all prevent them by
choosing to put safety first and respectfully sharing our streets. Together, we can get to zero and save lives.
We wish all of our students a successful school year and encourage them to dream BIG! The sky is the truly the limit.

Create a Public Place in a Parking Space on PARK(ing) Day S

On Friday, September 15, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the City of Fort Lauderdale is participating in
PARK(ing) Day, an annual movement where cities and people around the world transform metered parking spaces into temporary pop-up parks or parklets for everyone to enjoy.
PARK(ing) Day, which was created by
Rebar in San Francisco, demonstrates how a well-designed public space, even one as small as a parking space, can challenge us to reimagine and rethink the way urban space can be developed to benefit the community.
This year, the City of Fort Lauderdale is setting aside numerous parking spaces to allow citizens to install temporary pop-up parks on PARK(ing) Day. We invite neighbors, business owners, guests, students, and Community Builders to put on their creative caps and participate in PARK(ing) Day by reserving a parking space at
www.fortlauderdale.gov/parkingday.
Using just a parking space or two, pop-up park installations can be
anything from free health clinics and free bike repair shops to pop-up concerts or temporary urban farms. Just about anything is a go, as long as park activities are free and no cooking is involved. Check out the Parking Day Participation Manual for guidelines and requirements.
If you don't want to set up a pop-up park, you can still participate in PARK(ing) Day by visiting the park installations around the City. The PARK(ing) Day locations map on the Parking Day website will be updated as spaces are reserved so you'll know who is where and what's going on in each pop-up park.
Celebrate PARK(ing) Day with us on September 15th and see what our streets could be like with fewer cars and more people engaging in community building activities. Make sure to show

Neighbor Leadership Academy Starts Oct. 1st

The City of Fort Lauderdale is accepting applications for the next session of the Neighbor Leadership Academy (NLA), which is a community-building program created just for our neighbors
to educate them about various city functions and equip them with leadership skills to become effective neighborhood leaders. The next five-week session runs from October 4th to November 1st, 2017 and topics
include:
- City Structure and Leadership Assessment
- Ethics, Parliamentary Procedures and Team Building
- Navigating the City's Budget and Effective Decision Making
- Community Engagement and Volunteer Recruitment
- Fort Lauderdale's Future and Relationship-Building Strategies

Block parties are a lot of fun and a great way to meet or reconnect with neighbors, but the benefits they offer extend far beyond a meet-and-greet event. Getting to know your neighbors cultivates a sense of community and caring that makes neighborhoods stronger, safer places to live. Block parties also strengthen neighborhood spirit and awareness, introduce kids to new playmates, build lifelong friendships, and serve as a catalyst for future neighborhood gatherings.

A sewer main replacement in the Tarpon River neighborhood is having an impact on several neighborhoods as tanker trucks are being used to vacuum and transport sewage. Neighbors may notice tanker trucks with hoses in manholes until the project is complete.
