Please welcome The Reverend Elaine Hewes
who will preside at our service this Sunday.
Elaine Hewes retired in June from her position as pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bangor, after serving there for twenty years. She is
now working on a number of writing projects in keeping with her passion
for "opening Scripture" in new ways using art, music, poetry and theater. Elaine gives workshops on 'The Art of preaching,' 'The Christian life as a
Way of Seeing,' 'Rewriting the Psalms,' and 'Messing Around with the Text.' Elaine also enjoys preaching in a variety of congregations on Sunday mornings.
Elaine has lived in Sedgwick for over thirty years where, along with her husband Michael, she raised three children in an old farmhouse at the
edge of a blueberry field. She and Michael still live in Sedgwick, but now
on the banks of the Bagaduce River where they love to welcome their three grown children and four energetic grandsons as often as possible.

Ministry
Launch Update
Last weekend's Ministry Launch proved to be an energized and lively series of conversations among the Chairs, Co-Chairs and members of the five ministries represented. It also provided the ideal opportunity to step back and begin reviewing - in the context of our recently adopted Mission and Values - current activities as well as generate and discuss new thoughts and ideas for further consideration by their Ministry. Budgetary considerations and implications are also being integrated into this planning.
Many if not all of the ministries will be meeting and continuing to have conversations over the next week or two to give their Ministry Descriptions/Responsibilities the careful thought and consideration needed
in order to formalize and propose their Ministry's outcomes for the coming 12-18 months in the form of a Continuing Resolution to the Vestry for their meeting October 24th.
Once the Ministry Descriptions are received by the Vestry, the Ministries will
be invited to share their goals and plans with the Parish following Sunday services and in the e-newsletter over a period of several weeks.
We look forward to hearing and sharing more as the Ministries work collaboratively to develop their plans.

Fall Clean Up Day Saturday, October 28th
Get your work clothes on and join us for fall clean-up day at the church Saturday, October 28th, from 9:30 to 12noon. We'll be focusing on organizing and de-cluttering the basement, putting the flower beds to sleep
for the winter, and installing our window inserts. As always, there will be snacks, goodies and the opportunity to have fun while getting the work done!

198th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Maine
Saturday, October 28, 2017
Cross Insurance Center, Bangor
This year St. Brendan's will be represented at the convention by two delegates, Lis Ingoldsby and Woody Osborne. Alternates are Robert and Julia Walkling.
For those who have not attended a Diocesan convention, this might be a nice opportunity to attend and observe the proceedings of this annual meeting.

Outreach Team Report
The Outreach Team met on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the church. Members present were Jackie Wilson, Steven Hayward, Martha Dane, Anne Williams, Sidney Peck, Diane Greenlaw, Richard Paget, Skip Greenlaw, and by telephone Julie Pierson and Susan Wade.
Steve opened the meeting with a prayer. The minutes of the August 1st meeting were approved.
- Skip suggested an article be published in the Navigator asking members of the congregation to make regular monthly contributions of personal care items and food to the Island Pantry. Diane suggested that we designate the first Sunday of the month to bring items to church for the Island Pantry.
- $2,000 of the Outreach budget was be used to assist residents in purchasing "inside storm windows, however since there is no Windowdressers build this fall, a balance of $2,857 will remain in the budget. After discussion it was agreed to postpone any decision about expenditure of these funds until sometime in the future.
- $829 was approved for the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund toward hurricane relief.
- $500 was sent to Volunteers for Hancock Jail Residents in September.
- There will be an effort to have representatives of various organizations supported by Outreach visit St. Brendan's for worship and coffee hour so our members can become more familiar with them and their work.
The members of the Outreach Team expressed appreciation to Steve Hayward for the several months he has faithfully worked with the team. Steve has resigned from the Team due to time limitations.
Mickey Jacoba, who has been on the Outreach Team for many years, has also resigned to assume new responsibilities as Chair of the new Worship & Music Ministry. Mickey has been the 'conscience of the Outreach Team,' and we will miss her presence and counsel.
Notes from this meeting will be shared and incorporated into the Outreach Ministry planning and organizing going forward.

Scripture Notes for The Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost
During these last weeks of the Church Year, we come to the
section of Matthew's Gospel marked by intense confrontations between Jesus
and the religious
establishment; these confrontations were to lead to his crucifixion. In today's Gospel, Jesus is
again teaching about the Kingdom.
Here it is described in a way that antagonized the
establishment. If those who
are religious do not respond to God's call, they will be replaced by
others who
do respond.
In the first reading, Isaiah foresees the Kingdom of God as a great feast (the
same image Jesus
uses in today's Gospel reading) and as a feast for all people, not just a few. This is one of the
places in the Hebrew Scriptures where we see Israel's understanding of God as a national or
tribal God expanding into seeing God as God of all.
We continue to read Paul's letter to the Philippians. Paul brings his letter to its conclusion,calling on the people to live in peace and unity and to help one another.
Our gathering in Eucharist is a foreshadowing of the Kingdom of God. We are called to bring all
people into this fellowship and meal. In this way, the Kingdom
of God is revealed and
humanity's hope is made more certain.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Wilma Turner, William, Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Bob Harris, Sen. John McCain, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray
for
all who are preparing for, and will attend, the 198th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. For the Standing Committee, Diocesan Council and other decision making bodies of our Diocese.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
Swaziland - (Southern Africa)
On the Island and Peninsula, we pray for Eggemoggin Baptist, Sedgwick.
