Dear Saint Rose Families,

This evening our 8th graders will begin their journey back home after a week in Washington D.C. They had an exciting week touring Gettysburg, the White House, the Newseum, all of the monuments, the Smithsonian, the Capital and more.  Earlier this week they attended Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception.  Many thanks to Mrs. Brahier, Dr. David Kidd, Mrs. Sankowski and Mr. Kruse for chaperoning this trip.  Please pray for their safe travels.
Yesterday the 7th grade returned from their trip to Cleveland.  They saw the sites of the town, toured the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, went on a trolly tour, ate some great food and spent the night at the aquarium.  There they slept next to the shark tank. In the morning they conducted a water study from the Cuyahoga River.  Thank you to Ms. Beverick, Mr. Nudd and our parent volunteers for making this trip possible. The students had a great time.
Next week we begin our annual Book Fair week.  The book fair will be set up on Friday, October 20. Mrs. Busse has times arranged for every class to visit the book fair.  Preschool parents can stop in the book fair during the preschool movie night and preschool grandparents will have an opportunity during the Preschool Grandparents Days.
It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the first quarter! I hope that your child has adjusted well, made academic gains, found new friends and felt a deepening of his or her faith.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Bryon Borgelt

ClassMass for Grade 6 on October 22
RSVP and Sign up to Greet and Bring up Offertory

The second Class Mass will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the 9:00am Mass.  Families with students in Grade 6 are invited to worship together and to gather for a light reception to socialize in the Sacred Heart Center (school cafeteria) following Mass.  This is a wonderful time to strengthen or create bonds of Christian friendship.

Please click HERE to RSVP with the number who will be attending so that pews can be reserved in the front near the Saint Joseph altar and so that food can be provided.   You can also sign up for your family to bring up the Offertory gifts and to be Greeters before Mass.  Alternatively, you may RSVP with your family name and number of attendees by emailing Anne Brahier at brahier@saintroseonline.org.

The Parish/School Relations Subcommittee was very pleased with the 20+ families and around 100 people who attended the First Class Mass in September.  The Subcommittee hopes that many families from the school and parish will attend on October 22 for Grade 6 families!

Book-to-Action Author Presentation at Way Library

Way Library welcomes H. Luke Shaefer of the University of Michigan on Tuesday, October 17th at 7 pm.  Dr. Shaefer will speak on the findings of his recent co-authored book, $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America, and will discuss his next project, which will explore the importance of dignity as a fundamental building block for the well-being of people. What can we learn from social science about the impact of social rejection and social isolation that often accompanies poverty? Dr. Shaefer will explore the ways government and social service programs can either enhance people's dignity, or strip them of it.
H. Luke Shaefer, an associate professor at the U-M School of Social Work and Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, is the inaugural director of Poverty Solutions. His research on poverty and social welfare policy in the United States has been published in top peer-reviewed academic journals such as
Journal of Policy Analysis and Management  and the American Journal of Public Health, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation, among other sources. His recent book with Kathryn Edin, $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America, was named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2015 by the New York Times Book Review, and won the Hillman Prize for Book Journalism, among other awards.

CONTINUING ADULT FAITH FORMATION

"Too old too soon, too smart too late." That mantra comes to mind every time I
think about how I would have raised my daughters differently had I been more
knowledgeable about my Catholic faith. If I had life to live over again, the one
thing I would invest more time in would be learning and living a more authentic
practice of my Catholic faith as a mother and parent. It is the one investment that
offers eternal rewards." Mary Alice Newnam, St. Rose Parishioner
