Georgina Economic Development Updates

It's a safe bet visitors to Georgina's ClearWater Farm will marvel at the trees lining the property's new entrance lane. Few of those visitors, save the odd fossil-hunting kid, will admire the gravel underfoot.

When visitors stroll into ClearWater Farms they will be greeted by what Ontario Water Centre (OWC) co-founder Annabel Slaight calls "a long, living arch," which dapples visitors with sunlight and serenades them with the song of wind and leaves. But the stones are worth celebrating too. They are green gravel certified by the Cornerstone Standards Council (CSC), a national non-profit collaboration of industry, environmental, First Nations, and community groups that have developed the world's first voluntary standard for "responsible aggregate extraction".

The stone ordered for ClearWater's driveway was from Lafarge Canada's Oro Pit, one of the first CSC-certified aggregate producers. The gravel allows rain to sink into the soil rather than become runoff that carries a load of pollutants into the lake, "this driveway is contributing to the conservation and health of Lake Simcoe" Slaight says.

If the process succeeds, it will also honour the earth, not only as a source of stone, but of food, fresh air, clean water and beauty.
