Dear OLLI Members,
We keep trying to provide a full list of the wonderful people who acted as Class Reps in our Fall 2016 term. We left off Bobbie Rockwell and Donna Schramek but do not want to leave off our thanks to them and all of the fine people who work to make a more welcoming environment for our College for Seniors instructors and participants.
If you or someone you know is interested in teaching at College for Seniors and would like to brush up your skills using technology in the classroom, please sign up for Tech Talks at the link provided in this newsletter.
We hope you had a restful and festive Thanksgiving holiday. We now turn our thoughts to the winter holidays. We hope that you will mark your calendars to attend the performances of the Reuter Center Singers and of the Blue Ridge Orchestra, festive ways to celebrate the joys of the season. Remember that there are still events to enjoy on the UNC Asheville campus and right here at the Reuter Center.
And if you are still in a mood of gratitude, you may be looking for the opportunities to "give back" provided by OLLI's own Civic Engagement Committee and other groups listed in the newsletter.

Dec. 1 - Free screening of the documentary "Racing to Extinction" and discussion by race car driver Leilani Münter about her environmental activism and her role in the film. 7 p.m. in UNC Asheville's Highsmith Union, room 104.
ART
Dec. 2-3 - Student Art Sale - Handmade, affordable works by UNC Asheville art students, 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 in S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall.
Through Dec. 20 - exhibition of works by Megan Van Deusen will be on view in UNC Asheville's Owen Hall in the Second Floor Gallery, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays.
DANCE
Dec. 1-2 - Fall Dance Sharing - Works from faculty and students in UNC Asheville's Dance Program. Free at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 and Friday, Dec. 2, in UNC Asheville's Belk Theatre.

OLLI's Civic Engagement team has done it again! This group actively pairs our members with local nonprofits as volunteers in areas of particular interest. They've recently launched a new initiative to help address the issue of housing and homelessness in our area. More help is always welcome; you are encouraged to investigate any of these opportunities to determine whether one might be a fit for you.
One of the great joys of retirement is having time to develop meaningful connections and relationships within the community. Many OLLI members find fulfillment through volunteering, helping improve the quality of life for others.

Smith McDowell House Twilight Tours
Friday, December 2, 6-8:30 p.m.
Twilight Tours at Asheville's historic Smith-McDowell House (circa 1840)
will feature six rooms of the Smith-McDowell House representing the 1840s-1890s with beautiful holiday decorations
and costumed interpreters describing the nineteenth century evolution of Clement Moore's poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Light refreshments will be served along with a guided exhibit of vintage Victorian Christmas decorations.
Reservations for the 50 minute tour are required and can be made by calling the Smith-McDowell House 828.253.9231

It's always exciting to hear the work of a new generation of students and to know that our members were able to see the projects from the very beginning.

Ingrid Weurth will detail the impact of Responsibility to Protect, the global political commitment endorsed by all United Nations member states. She is the Helen Strong Curry Chair in International Law and Director, International Legal Studies Program
at Vanderbilt Law School.
The World Affairs Council (WAC) offers fascinating lectures and discussions that aim to advance international awareness and foster Western North Carolina's global ties. OLLI members receive a discount on WAC annual membership fee. WAC members attend lectures at no cost. All others attend at a cost of $10.

Community Volunteer Opportunities
at Emma Elementary School
Congregations 4 Children, an initiative of the NC Conference United Methodist Church is
looking for volunteers to work as reading buddies with children K-3 at Emma Elementary School. This commitment would be 30-45 minutes one day a week for the school year.

Children First/ Communities In School is in need of volunteers at Emma Elementary for the Lunch Buddy Program. Volunteers will serve as tutor/mentors for students in need of a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult and academic assistance. This is a yearlong commitment of 45 minutes per week.
