River of Time Museum/4th Grade Sonoran Desert Animal Project

FHUSD and the River of Time Museum have partnered many times and I greatly value our relationship and mutual support.  The latest collaboration is the museum's Gallery Opening for the Four Peaks Elementary School's fourth grade team. Beginning December 2nd, students' projects will be featured in the gallery and displayed for public viewing.

The 120 students from Mrs. Huckabay's, Mrs. McDonald's, Ms. Reichler's, Mrs. Violette's, and Ms. Wolf's classes researched Sonoran Desert animals and created visual representations such as posters, models, dioramas, pamphlets, and PowerPoint presentations.  Research was done both at school and at home and when completed, students presented their projects in their classes.  Things on which they focused included habitats, interesting facts, survival techniques, and predatory behaviors.

There is a sizable body of educational research that supports the benefits of displaying students' work in public, whether in the classroom, school hallways, media center, or cafeteria.  These benefits include:  raising students' motivation in learning; students seeing that their work is valued and appreciated; communicating to students that they are capable of higher order creative and critical thinking as well as sophisticated inquiry and communication; and improving teaching through teachers' thoughtful reflection on students' demonstrations of learning. I submit to you that having our students' work displayed at the River of Time Museum serves to amplify those effects.

Congratulations in advance to the fourth grade students and teachers!  I hope all of you have the chance to visit the exhibit at the River of Time Museum.

Next Falcon Focus will be December 2nd

Due to next week being Thanksgiving Break, we will not publish a Falcon Focus.  Our next edition will be sent on Friday, December 2nd.  I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving and the enjoyment of reflecting on our many blessings as we spend time with family and friends.
