2018 pre-budget submission
In our 2018 submission to the federal pre-budget consultation, the Federation calls for action on the recommendations of the Science Review. The Federation also makes recommendations on funding balance between disciplines, international and multidisciplinary research collaborations, and Indigenous scholarship. Big Thinking on the Hill 

The exciting  fall line-up begins on September 21 with Senior Fellow Bessma Momani and former Ambassador and Assistant Deputy Minister Jillian Stirk discussing the relationship between diversity and economic prosperity. This is followed by lectures on economic inequality by  Patrick Turmel of Université Laval on October 24 and on Indigenous governance by  Katherine Graham of Carleton University and  David Newhouse of Trent University on November 21.
Big Thinking on the road
On November 2, the Federation is organizing a  Big Thinking panel event at the upcoming 9th Canadian Science Policy Conference. The panel " Expertise in a post-truth era: How to be a trusted advisor in a low-trust world" will be moderated by Federation Executive Director, Gabriel Miller alongside speaker Mark Kingwell, Professor of Philosophy, University of Toronto. 
  
New reconciliation video resources

Two new interdisciplinary video resources from Congress 2017 are now available on the Federation's reconciliation page. "Pedagogies for putting reconciliation into action in the classroom" focuses on Indigenizing teaching, while "Wise research practices: Reconciliation and HSS research" investigates how to ensure research respects and engages Indigenous knowledges and communities.

New Journal Impact and Innovation Fund 
The Canadian Association of Learned Journals (CALJ) has developed a proposal for the creation of a national fund - the Journal Impact and Innovation Fund (JIIF) - which it is circulating for comment and discussion. CALJ is reaching out to members for feedback to gain support for and strengthen the proposal. The full proposal can be found here.

Canada Research Chairs Programs formal evaluation
Every five years, all Canada Research Chairs Programs undergo a formal evaluation to ensure the program is accountable for the use of public funds; is efficient and effective; and is transparent and meeting its objectives. The findings from these evaluations are then used to manage and improve the program's design, policies and procedures. Read the online public consultation on 15th-year evaluation and submit your comments to the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat here.  
New scholarly publishing model

The Canadian Scholarly Publishing Working Group - a multi-stakeholder working group which includes the Federation, scholarly publishers, academic libraries, funders and researchers - released its final report on July 4. It features an overview of the Canadian landscape for scholarly publishing, principles that characterize a sustainable scholarly publishing and outlines a model framework for moving Canadian scholarly publishing toward a sustainable future. 
Érudit launches Salons

Érudit launched Salons this summer, a new online magazine that will explore key issues in Canadian society every month. Read about it here on the Federation blog and check out the latest issue - Salon No. 3 August 2017 - which explores the role played by Indigenous communities in archaeological research.
Canadian Government funding for First Nations students

The Government of Canada is launching a comprehensive review of programs that support Indigenous post-secondary education, starting with some new funding announcements: $2 million for the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, and $3 million for First Nations University of Canada. CIFAR global call for ideas

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) has announced a new call for proposals for long-term, multidisciplinary research projects that are "novel, bold and potentially transformative." Scholars from all research areas are invited to apply. Call for letters of intent begins in November, with a January 31, 2018 deadline. See more, and sign up to receive updates here .
