Back-to-School Night for Parents: Thursday, Aug. 24
Parents and guardians, it's time to head back to school to experience your student's school day!
Back-to-School Night will be held tomorrow - Thursday, Aug. 24 . Please plan to arrive around 6 p.m. to allow for parking and seating. The evening will kick off with a brief, but important, presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the South Gym, where you will meet this year's administrators and department chairs. You will then attend each of your student's classes during the next two hours. Class periods will last 10 minutes with 8-min. passing periods. You will have the opportunity to walk your student's daily schedule and meet teachers, staff and administrators along the way. Wear your walking shoes, as you may be going back and forth between buildings, depending on your student's schedule! Schedules were mailed home to you, but you may also pick up a copy in the South Cafeteria that evening. Thank you, in advance, for your attendance on this special night!

HFU Workshops for Parents: Aug. 30 & Sept. 6

H-F is offering several parent workshops this first semester. Please join us for these upcoming workshops:
  • Wednesday, Aug. 30 -
#StartStrong: Tips & Resources to Promote Student Success
Parents and students, attend this workshop together in the TLC at 7 p.m. to learn about the many resources H-F offers. Teachers will share study tips and organizational strategies, and a panel of parents and students will answer your questions and talk about how they have learned to thrive in H-F's high-expectations academic environment.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 6 -
A+ English: Pointers for Helping Students Make the Grade

Wondering how to help your freshmen and sophomores find success in English class? Join H-F faculty members in the TLC at 7 p.m. as they translate the English Department's common systems, vocabulary, and rubrics into easy-to-understand terms. You will get first-hand practice with such essential skills as annotating a short passage, labeling an essay, and even exploring Google Classroom. As a result of attending this workshop, you should feel more confident about providing assistance to your teens at home, and be ready to engage in more informed conversations with their English teachers, as well.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 6 - College Planning for Seniors & Parents Parents and seniors, join H-F's college counselors - Kevin Coy & Brad Kain - along with a representative from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) for a discussion about H-F's college counseling program, the college application timeline and the financial aid process. You will also get a first-hand look at a variety of post-secondary options and gain insight into selecting the right college. This workshop will begin at 7 p.m. in the Mall Auditorium.

Homecoming Week: Sept. 11-16
School has begun and that means Homecoming will be here before you know it! Tickets for this year's Homecoming Dance: Alice in Wonderland (set for Saturday, Sept. 16, in the South Gym) are now on sale in the Campus Store through Sept. 14. Tickets are $20/person and they are non-refundable. If you are bringing a guest who is not a current H-F student, a guest form must be completed and returned to the Deans Office by Tuesday, Sept. 12. The week leading up to the dance will be filled with themed-dress days and Viking athletic contests. Stay tuned for more details to come!
- IN CASE YOU MISSED IT -

Members of our Science Department made Monday's eclipse part of the day's curriculum at H-F, using telescopes and other devices to safely view the event. Teachers also had the opportunity to have their students watch a livestream broadcast from NASA of the eclipse in their classrooms.  Mr. Anderson (center) got into the solar spirit by donning his official NASA space camp suit.
