According the recent Open Doors findings released by the Institute of International Education (IIE), 11,010 undergraduate students in the U.S. chose Germany as their study abroad destination in 2014/15. This is a 6.1% increase over the year before. Germany is ranked 6th overall and represents approximately 3.5% of the study abroad market share. The growth is in accord with the overall trend concerning the number of U.S. students who studied abroad for academic credit. This number rose to 313,415 in 2014-15, signaling a 2.9% increase from the previous year. "These figures confirm a continuing growth of the popularity of Germany as a study and research destination," commented Dr. Nina Lemmens, Director, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), New York. "This also reflects the commitment of the German government, DAAD and its partners in developing attractive study abroad and degree programs and research opportunities in Germany - and funding to facilitate this mobility." The new data in Open Doors also revealed a very slight decrease in the number of students from Germany enrolled at U.S. universities and institutions of higher education. According to the latest data, 10,145 German students were enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher education in the 2014-15 academic year. This figure represents a 0.5% decline from the previous year. More broadly, the latest Open Doors data showed that 1 in 10 U.S. undergraduates studies abroad before graduating. Supported by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Open Doors is a comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States, and U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at their home colleges or universities.
