SHOWCASING SAFETY
SAFETY AROUND WATER PRESENTATION
On Tuesday, August 1 the Y invited local legislatures, school officials and board members to learn more about the Safety Around Water (SAW) Program.  The morning included a presentation about the SAW program and the opportunity to watch the program in action.

SAW is a 4-week program, which meets twice a week, available to 3rd graders in the Appleton, Neenah and Menasha School Districts at not charge. This program is funded by a $1 million endowment gift by the Robert Brown Family.

Students learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations. The Y is committed to reducing water-related injuries and  SAW is proven to lessen the risk of drowning and gives children confidence in and around the water.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Our community working together is one of the things that makes the Fox Cities such a great place to live. There are so many great collaborations happening and we are proud to be a part of many of them.

I am happy to share with your one of the partnerships the Y is currently involved in:

ENJOY THE BOUNTY OF THE SEASON
HIT THE FARMERS MARKETS
Healthy Living Tips from Brenda Johnson, Executive Director at the Fox West YMCA

There are many advantages to buying your food at the farmers market. Here are six of them:

1. You're supporting local farmers and small business owners.  A lot of times, small farms and small businesses are just getting their start, and don't have a lot of financial backing.

2. It's healthier and more sustainable to eat food that is locally grown. Eating food grown in the local area cuts down on the money, energy and resources needed to ship the food to you.

3.  It creates an excellent opportunity to communicate with those who grow or create the foods you eat. It's important to know what you're eating. And what a better way to find out what's in your food then being able to talk to the person who grows it and sells it to you?

4. It helps to build community in your city or neighborhood. One of the great things about going to the farmers market is that it brings people together.

5. Fruits and vegetables are fresher, and therefore, taste better. Fruits and vegetables at a farmers market usually taste fresher and better. They haven't been traveling on a truck. They were most likely picked the day before or even that morning.

6. It's outside.

A SPECIAL PLACE TO BELONG
CAMP HOPE AND EMPOWER ME CAMP

Every summer the YMCA of the Fox Cities holds two very special camps for very special campers.

Camp Hope is a 2-week day camp for children ages 6 to 15 with physical and cognitive disabilities. This camp gives children the opportunity to experience outdoor activities in a safe setting built around special themes each day. Swimming, field trips, super hero, sports days and a carnival help round out this exciting camp.

This is not only an amazing experience for the campers but also extremely rewarding for the counselors. Listen to what they had to say about their camp experience:

Empower Me Camp  is a week long day camp for higher functioning youth on the Autism Spectrum where each child has an opportunity to learn, create and play.  This camp offers children an educational opportunity to begin developing skills that can help them learn essential social, physical and intellectual building blocks. Kids participate in fun activities such as swimming, physical activities, arts and crafts and music.

PARNTERING FOR FITNESS

WHIFFER'S FITNESS CLUB

The Y is proud to partner with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Subway, Glen & Daniels S.C., Fleet Feet Sports and Network Health to provide Whiffer's Fitness Club. For the past 3 years Whiffer, the lovable Timber Rattler mascot, has been on a fitness journey and they Y has been right by his side.

Every summer Whiffer visits each of our locations for fitness activities with our campers. Whiffer along with the Timber Rattlers players encourage kids to get active and try new things. Whiffer is up for any challenge including Zumba, yoga and whiffle (or Whiffer) ball.

It is always a great day when Whiffer shows up He always takes time to play and sign autographs but most importantly he shows kids that being active can be lots of fun!
