Family and Consumer Science Report
Rhonda Peters, FCS Agent
Sequoia Hill, Nutrition Educator

My name is Rhonda Peters, and I am thrilled to have joined the Cooperative Extension team in July 2017 as the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent for Montgomery County.  I graduated in 2001 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies with concentration in Child and Adolescent Development.  I have spent the past fourteen years working in Montgomery County at the Health Department, educating members of our community about various health topics and working with committees to decrease health disparities while improving overall health in the community.  I am eager to c
ombine my education and professional experience to empower families to thrive and succeed in various aspects of their lives including chronic disease prevention, family well-being, leadership development, and financial management.

The Nutrition Educator recently finished up the Try Healthy program with children at Family Worship Ministries in Troy. This was a 5-week program composed of two different curricula; Go Glow Grow which is targeted for preschoolers, and Speedway to Healthy which is targeted for school-aged kids. Both programs emphasize the importance of healthy eating, simple recipes to make at home, and physical activity.

We offered a class that taught children how to prepare Healthy Simple Snacks! They learned how to make a fruit salad and homemade pretzels. They learned about My Plate and the importance of drinking plenty of Water. And, one young lady told us that she "made chicken salad for dinner last night for her family after learning in our Get Chopped Class." I love when kids take away lessons learned in our classes and apply them at home!

In our Get Chopped Class the kids learned about My Plate, about using fruit as a dessert substitute (kids made their own fruit popsicles), prepared black bean and mushroom quesadillas for lunch, students designed their own restaurant and participated in a Chopped competition where they worked together as a team to make chicken salad. They learned about proper knife cutting skills throughout the class as well. Many of the kids tried new foods and stated that they would make these recipes again at home.
