Shankar Subramaniam is the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Endowed Chair Professor of Bioengineering and Systems Biology at the University of California San Diego. He is a distinguished professor of Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Cellular & Molecular Medicine and Nano Engineering at the University of California San Diego. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and a Senior Member of IEEE.  Subramaniam's innovative work has major impact on research and development in academia and industry by allowing the synthesis of complex biological and medical information from genes and molecules into integrated knowledge at cellular and system levels, thus providing important basis for drug discovery and innovation.



Steve received his Ph.D. in 1984 in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois. Dr. Wright began his career as an Engineer/Scientist for MRI at the Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. He joined the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1988, where he established the Magnetic Resonance Systems Lab and is the Wisenbaker Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Radiology. From 2013 to 2017 he served as the associate department head for undergraduate education in ECE. During the summer and fall of 2000, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and currently has an affiliate appointment at the Advanced Imaging Research Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

James L. Patton is Professor of Bioengineering at The University of Illinois at Chicago, and is a senior research scientist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). He also holds an affiliate positions in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in but grew up in Racine, Wisconsin. He was educated in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science (dual BS, University of Michigan) Theoretical Mechanics (MS, Michigan State University), and Biomedical Engineering (Ph.D., Northwestern University). He worked for Ford Motor Company and as a cyclotron operator before turning his attention to academia and human movement. His general interests involve robotic teaching, balance gait, arm control, haptics, modeling, human-machine interfaces, and neurorehabilitation following brain injury. He is Editor in Chief of the IEEE- Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) Conference Editorial Board (CEB), associate Editor of Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, a member of the Advisory Committee for the EMB society, and chaired the technical committee on biomedical robotics

November 2nd, Glasgow, UK

This one-day collaborative workshop, immediately following the IEEE Sensors 2017 Conference, will focus on "sensing the brain".  Several technology speakers will provide short presentations setting the stage for panel and breakout discussions where participants will identify challenges and explore solutions.  The outcomes of this one-day workshop will be included in a future publication.

The 3rd IEEE EMBS international Student Conference in Egypt

The 3rd IEEE EMBS international Student Conference in Egypt (ISC-Egypt'17) is going to take place on 12-13 October 2017, at Nile University, Cairo, Egypt. The conference is intended to be a scientific gathering of Biomedical Engineering students from around the world. Aiming to create an inspiring environment for students by giving them the opportunity to share their scientific project and ideas in a professional environment. The conference is organized and planned by students.

Acceptance Notification for Two And Four Page Papers Has Been Extended Until October 16, 2017

The first IEEE Life Sciences Conference (LSC) will be held in Sydney, Australia, 13-15 December 2017. The overall theme of the conference is "Personalized Healthcare & Wearables". The IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community (LSTC), which is supported by multiple IEEE member societies, is the sponsor of the conference. As such, the conference will cover diverse topics within the theme.

LSC 2017 will include tutorials and a scientific program composed of plenary talks, invited sessions, and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers. ISBI 2018

The IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) is soliciting proposals to help accelerate the pace of research on an academic/clinical problem. Each challenge needs an organizing team responsible for providing training and test data, defining the tasks, specifying the metrics used to measure performance, managing entries, and organizing the on-site workshop presentations.

C ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.


At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

"For the first time, the American University of Sharjah has carried out an event titled as "Engineering Open Day" to bring together all the engineering student chapters at the university. EMBS Student Chapter has participated in this event where the board members interacted with different students from different engineering majors and backgrounds. The board members also helped shed light onto biomedical engineering, EMBS activities, and benefits of membership."

Federal Workers Who Made a Difference


The federal government gets a bad rap: it is constantly described as bloated and clunky, its workers as inefficient and ineffectual. Yet by and large, the men and women who make up the federal workforce rise above the criticism, put one foot in front of the other and do their job. Rarely is the work they do acknowledged, much less praised. But for the past 16 years, the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, or Sammies, have sought to change that by honoring federal employees who have an outsize impact on the country and the world. Technical Activities Spotlight
MICCAI Workshops on Computing and Visualization for Intravascular Imaging and Computer Assisted Stenting (CVII-STENT)

It was the 6th year of the MICCAI Workshops on Computing and Visualization for Intravascular Imaging and Computer Assisted Stenting (CVII-STENT) bringing together academic, clinical, and industrial researchers in the field of endovascular interventions to discuss the state-of-the-art in the area. The oral sessions were punctuated by invited talks by Prof Guy Cloutier (CHUM Research Centre, Canada) and Katharina Breininger (Siemens Healthcare, Germany) as well as short talks by Su-Lin Lee (Imperial College London, UK) and Luc Duong (École de technologie supérieure, Canada). We welcome all researchers involved in the fields of endovascular imaging, interventions, and robotics and we hope to see you next year!

Roach Biobots
TOWARD RELIABILITY AND OPTIMIZATION OF CONTROL

Imagine a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, causing residential buildings to collapse and trapping the people inside. First responders spend a significant amount of time locating survivors but despite having the assistance of life-detection tools and techniques, they are still hampered by certain limitations in pinpointing exact locations deep within the rubble. Current methods involving dogs and relatively large robots and machinery can assist only with surface-level surveying of the disaster area and removal of rubble. In contrast, a swarm of centimeter-scale robots could be employed for under-rubble mapping and surveying in these scenarios. However, these prototypes still require improvements in the efficiency of the mechanical parts and control systems deployed in real-life scenarios. Some of these inefficiencies could potentially be addressed by using live insects, such as Madagascar hissing cockroaches, instrumented with electronic backpacks as a low-cost, alternative solution. These biobots would be useful as instrumented beasts of burden, traveling through crevices in dynamic environments such as in the rubble of postdisaster scenarios and other premises hazardous to humans and other mammals.

Healthcare is being transformed by Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled technology. The traditional hubs of healthcare, such as hospitals and clinics, are being transformed into personalized healthcare systems-especially the mobile environment. The goal of this special issue is to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry into a single forum to explore state-of-the-art research and applications in innovative technology for IoT-enabled personalized healthcare systems, including improvement of quality of life, clinical diagnosis, mental health, diet/exercise, and chronic disease self-management. Accepted papers will present efficient scientific and engineering solutions, address the needs and challenges for integration with new technologies, and provide a vision for future research and development. The special issue is especially focused on four major aspects of IoT-enabled healthcare: (1) Artificial Intelligence patterns or data mining algorithms for effectively and efficiently analyzing IoT-based personalized healthcare and clinical data. (2) Personalized knowledge models or systems to assist clinicians in decision-making for diagnosis and medication selection. (3) Interoperable and interactive IoT systems or applications to support heterogeneous devices in accessing, sharing, visualizing and exploring long-term individual behavior information.
Atomic Force Microscopy in Characterizing Cell Mechanics for
Biomedical Applications: A Review

Cell mechanics is a novel label-free biomarker for indicating cell states and pathological changes. The advent of atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides a powerful tool for quantifying the mechanical properties of single living cells in aqueous conditions. The wide use of AFM in characterizing cell mechanics in the past two decades has yielded remarkable novel insights in understanding the development and progression of certain diseases, such as cancer, showing the huge potential of cell mechanics for practical applications in the field of biomedicine. In this paper, we reviewed the utilization of AFM to characterize cell mechanics. First, the principle and method of AFM single-cell mechanical analysis was presented, along with the mechanical responses of cells to representative external stimuli measured by AFM. Next, the unique changes of cell mechanics in two types of physiological processes (stem cell differentiation, cancer metastasis) revealed by AFM were summarized. After that, the molecular mechanisms guiding cell mechanics were analyzed. Finally the challenges and future directions were discussed.
