Saturday August 12
th, two Polytechnic graduates, James Howard, '53 and George Howard, '48 and twenty of their family members from Florida, South Carolina and Pennsylvania assembled at Poly as part of their family reunion weekend. They were escorted by Barb Stricklin and Harry Berman who showed them around the Poly Archives and numerous rooms in the academic and engineering buildings. The highlights of the tour were the Archives, the Aquaponics lab, the Robotics room, and naturally King Memorial Hall. All were impressed by what Poly students are studying these days as well as the statistics provided to them about the 2017 graduating class. A lot of pictures were taken and a lot of questions asked. James and George had their pictures taken beside the picture of Dr. Dehuff, as they have fond memories of him as their principal. A good time was had by all and the Poly Foundation and Alumni office were pleased to have these folks visit the Polytechnic campus!

Poly Alumni Corner
Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Mr. Manley moved to Baltimore with his family in 1942. Living in Brooklyn on the South side of Baltimore he traveled across town to attend Poly at North Avenue. Jack was in the Poly Follies, played basketball and was the team captain, and was on the track team, where he was also team captain. Bill O'Keefe, then a teacher and coach at Poly, helped him get a basketball scholarship to Wake Forest.
A self-described less than high performing student, John went to Wake Forest University where he graduated with a degree in physical education. His education was interrupted for service to his country and his claim to fame at Wake Forest is that he became friends with Arnold Palmer, shagging balls for him while he practiced. John is married to Berchie, his wife of 68 years and has three children. He and his wife reside in Catonsville and on December 25th will celebrate their 69th anniversary.
A teacher, John worked at several schools before starting his career at then, Catonsville Community College. Under John's leadership, the physical education department grew steadily including new physical facilities. In recognition of his outstanding efforts, the athletic facility at CCBC is named in his honor, the "Jack Manley Wellness and Athletics Center". John retired in 1985. In 1976, John, along with several doctors started the first Cardiac Exercise Program, Prescribed Active Cardiac Exercise (PACE) not connected to a hospital. Always one to be involved, John has raised funds and continues to raise funds for many projects in the Catonsville area.
John said that Poly provided discipline and had a great faculty that helped him develop. One of his most memorable moments was getting caught by Dr. Dehuff without a tie on. Dr. Dehuff asked if he liked being at Poly to which naturally he responded yes. Dr. Dehuff said "No Tie, No Student." John wore a tie every day thereafter. In addition to his fond memories of Poly, he is most proud of his work with the medical aspects of sports and his work promoting senior fitness and senior Olympics

The Poly family is saddened to learn of the passing of the following community member:
- Edward Nathaniel Thomas Charles Williams, Sr., '69
On February 26, 2017 Edward NTC Williams, Sr. exchanged time for eternity when he passed away at his home in SC. Edward graduated from the Poly Special College Preparatory Course and while at Poly participated in football both freshmen and sophomore year, served as an activities representative, served on the student advisory board, and was a member of the National Honor Society. His post Poly career is lovingly documented in the attached Homegoing program.

Annual or life memberships are now available, and please note that the Board of Directors has voted to end the partial life payment program. Members participating in this program are being asked to send in the remainder of their payments and become Life Members. Your generous contributions allow the BPIAA to continue the programs and scholarships for the students of Poly. The BPIAA supports the open house program, the Poly website, manages the Annual Alumni Dinner, the Poly/City Golf Tournament and sponsors the Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni recognition programs.
