Though chilly autumn winds were blowing, 139 golfers turned out to participate in our 10
th
Annual Flatbush Golf Tournament in Littlestown, PA on September 30.
Everyone enjoyed not only the golfing, but also the raffle baskets, 50/50, delicious food and joyful fellowship.
Sister Eileen Marnien SSJ
, Congregational Vice-President, greeted everyone at lunch and thanked the golf committee, the staff, volunteers, and all the golfers for their support of this event which helps support our retired sisters at Saint Joseph Villa.
Sister Jane Keller SSJ
, committee member, commented on the great support received from many area sponsors.
We received more beautiful raffle baskets and donated prizes than ever before. Our sponsors are amazingly generous.
We are
grateful and appreciative for all who make this event possible. We have such dedicated volunteers who faithfully help out at this tournament, and golfers who play year after year. That’s a big part of why it runs so smoothly and is such a great success. The $15,000 raised at this event helps us to provide for basic needs and medical care for our elderly sisters who live at Saint Joseph Villa. God bless you!

Forty Hours Devotion
October 4-5, 2017

As Sisters of Saint Joseph, Associates and Partners in Mission, we are heartbroken at the miseries and suffering of our dear neighbors throughout the world. Impelled by the Spirit of God and our consciousness that all is one, over 1,200 people united in 40 consecutive hours of prayer for the places in our world, country, cities, homes, and hearts most in need of peace, healing, light, and love. What a beautiful new way to engage in a sacred practice of our church while living out our call to be a healing presence in any and all situations. May our prayers lead us to action on behalf of all of those in need of our love this day!
Our prayer began at 6 am on October 4 until 10 pm on October 5.

Fall Assembly 2017

Rooted in our contemplative life stance and our desire to live ever more boldly the Gospel, our Constitutions, and our Generous Promise, approximately 300 Sisters of Saint Joseph and SSJ Associates gathered in Martino Hall on October 7, 2017, for the Fall Assembly.
Sister Teresa Shaw SSJ
facilitated the assembly and introduced the co-facilitators for Chapter 2019, Sisters Esther Anderson and Lynn Lavin, Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.
Sisters Esther and Lynn presented some processes for communal discernment for our consideration to use in preparation for and during the Chapter.
Time was allotted for questions, as well as, small and large group conversation about what was presented.
During the afternoon session, participants continued to explore what it means to commit ourselves to dynamic engagement between leadership and membership so that we can more fully live our Generous Promise.
In her remarks,
Sister Anne Myers SSJ
, Congregational President, shared that
over the past few years, we, as a Congregation, have been moving into more contemplative ways of being together, ways that give space for the Spirit of God to breathe more freely in our midst. As she prepared for the Assembly, Anne was drawn to pray with the Scripture passage, Philippians 2:5-11:
Let that same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped...
Sister Anne continued, “I began to realize that the practices underlying communal discernment and contemplative processes could immerse us in the mind of Christ. Contemplative processes and communal discernment have the potential to move us in the direction of experiencing Philippians 2, LIVE. They are processes, that if approached with confidence in God and one another, heartfelt love and abandonment of self, can grow us more deeply into the mind of Christ. This is our Congregation in motion--doing the work of unioning love, our mission, that nudges us from an
“I” to a “we”
as we surrender to the Spirit who leads us into God’s future.”

Annual Sole Sister Run/Walk
Cape May Point, New Jersey

Over 100 participants turned out to participate in the 8
th
Annual Sole Sister Run/Walk to benefit Saint Mary by-the-Sea Retreat House on Sunday, October 8.
The professional staff of TNT Event Management Company plotted out the 5K and 1 Mile courses, taking the athletes all around beautiful, scenic Cape May Point, and timed each runner.
Sister Sharon McCarthy
, Administrator, announced the winners and awarded medals to the top female and male finishers in each age category.
“I love the Sole Sister run! This time I got my parents and my fiancé to register and race with me. We had a great time,” shared Maggie Myers.
“We are so grateful to everyone who sponsored this event, and to all the volunteers, especially the students from Chestnut Hill College. We couldn’t do it without your help,” said Nicole Schlein, Events Coordinator.
The $10,000 raised will help pay for some repairs and maintenance projects that will be done over the winter.
