SHARE:
We are changing our release What's on the MOVES to the first and third Friday of the month. Our goal is to share information about upcoming events, agency news and relevant announcements with the DC MOVES mailing list. If you have information to share through this bulletin, please contact the DC MOVES Coordinator  Carol Good.

September 15 Forum Highlights

On September 15, we held the DC MOVES Forum at Georgian College Orangeville campus. The Forum was attended by 36 people who represented 25 organizations. For the first time we had two media representatives present - Tammy from snapd Dufferin took the "jazz hands" photo shown below.

We had three informative presenters who generously shared information and engaged the people attending:
  • Jane Hall, County of Dufferin, Community Services, Children's wellbeing data
  • Steph St Louis - HatsOnDufferin, Campaign update
  • Mark Rodford, UW Wellington Dufferin, Fall Campaign Launch

After the presentations, we did an update on the progress in each of the three priority pillars - Community Wellbeing, Poverty Reduction and Resource Sharing. We wrapped up the morning with small group discussions about how participating organizations' work aligned with the DC MOVES priorities and how to connect more effectively.

Poverty Reduction
The Dragonfly Walk
In memory of Kyle Matthew Carhart  & In support of Choices Youth Shelter

On October 12, 2014, we lost a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and a friend. The Dragonfly Walk is a memorial hike in honour of Kyle Matthew Carhart

This walk was conceived by Kyle's sister Brianna who decided to celebrate his life by taking a hike and enjoying nature and its beauty as he did. She put out an open invitation for friends and family to join her. Brianna's memorial walk was a huge success.

Family and friends came together to remember Kyle and enjoy the beauty that is Ontario's Bruce Trail. Following the walk, participants met for a meal. Somebody suggested that the event become an annual outing, and someone else added that it could be turned into a fundraiser. The Dragonfly Walk was born!

This year's walk is again in support of the Choices Youth Shelter in Orangeville. Their mission is to be a safe and supportive resource within Dufferin County that offers homeless youth, 16 to 24 years of age, an alternative to living on the street and supports their transition to a more productive and brighter future.

The 2017 Dragonfly Walk will take place on Saturday, October 7th (rain or shine). Brianna has chosen Hoggs Falls to explore. In the interest of conserving energy and reducing lost and misplaced participants, everyone is asked to meet at 701 Cook Crescent, Shelburne by 1:00pm - then carpool to the site.

Donations of food and clothing for example can be dropped off directly to the shelter, or brought with you on the day of the walk. Monetary donations can be made online through the shelter's website, either through CanadaHelps or PayPal. Remember to tell them that the donation is in memory of Kyle Carhart.

Did we tell you there was going to be a prize awarded to the person who brought in the most money? We're having games, scavenger hunts and other fundraising events too. And food - there will be food! We hope you can join us on October 7th. See you there!

Minimum Wage Increase Came into Effect
October 1

The Province increased the general minimum wage effective October 1, 2017, bringing it up to $11.60. As a part of Ontario's Fair Workplaces and Better Jobs plan, the general minimum wage will increase to $14 on January 1, 2018, and to $15 on January 1, 2019, which would be followed by annual increases at the rate of inflation.
