National School Bus Safety Week

Click here for school bus safety tips from NAPT.
2017 National School Bus Safety Week: October 16-20, 2017 and the theme is
"# STOP ON RED!"
The theme of National School Bus Safety Week is derived from the Poster Contest the year before. The 2016 winning poster, depicted to the left, was drawn by Branden Pagurayan, Grade 8 at Kapolei Middle School, Kapolei, HI.

Held during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties - to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. Designed to promote school bus safety, school districts throughout the country observe School Bus Safety Week.

Meet the DD5

The DD5 engine, which is the latest in  medium-duty engine technology, will deliver power, performance and best-in-class fuel economy and reliability. Suited for the Saf-T-Liner C2, it was designed to offer a low overall cost of ownership and make serviceability a breeze. It features top-load oil and fuel filters and the longest service intervals in its class, with up to 45,000 mile oil and fuel filter change intervals.

Meet the DD8

Much like the DD5, the DD8 will decrease your fleet's total cost of ownership with longer maintenance intervals and improved fuel efficiency.
Both the DD5 and DD8 engine, which meet 2017 Greenhouse Gas (GHG17) standards, utilize a global medium-duty engine platform that benefits the pupil transportation market particularly well.  Both engines employ innovative technology such as variable exhaust cam phasing, which allows additional heat to the exhaust stream. This new technology enables efficient operation of the after treatment system in low speed stop-and-go operations, which is ideal for school buses. What does this mean for you? After treatment headaches of your current engines will become a thing of the past.
Both engines also come with the most advanced connectivity platform in the pupil transportation industry, Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service. Virtual Technician will help you make informed maintenance decisions, so you only service your buses when needed. When one of your buses needs to go into the shop, Virtual Technician with the backing of the experts at the Detroit Customer Support Center, will provide access to the most in-depth information available to get your bus repaired as quickly and accurately as possible, improving up-time.

The Detroit DD5 and the Detroit DD8 will be available for order in 2018 from any Thomas Built Buses dealer.

The Embodiment of Lasting Values

Over the past 101 years, Thomas Built Buses has stood the test of time and continues to lead in safety, innovation, quality and making some of the most popular school buses in the industry.

I personally believe that the reason we are so successful - and have been for so many years - is because Thomas Built Buses still embodies the family heritage and the values the Thomas family instilled in the company in the beginning. Values like being disciplined, working hard, being purposeful in all we do, embodying teamwork with our employees, dealers and customers, always being positive and having some fun along the way have all made Thomas Built the upstanding company it is.

But even more than that, as employees and dealers, everyone at Thomas Built Buses pushes every day to not just meet status quo, but to rise above expectations and deliver the best products and customer experience possible. And we do this through a series of values that make us who we are.

We are Respectful - We respect people without any biases of background, position, status, etc. and that respect extends to our products, company, business partners and competitors. We showcase this value even in our product line which includes a variety of engine types, fuel choices and safety features. Because at the end of the day, we respect others' opinions and the choices that they make.

We are Responsible - As a manufacturer of school buses, we have a lot of responsibility resting on our shoulders. And that responsibility aligns with our intent to drive improvements and safety features for our coworkers, shareholders, customers, community and environment. We don't take our responsibility lightly. In fact, we embrace it.

We are Honest - We tell the truth - always. We are passionate about being honest and upfront with ourselves and with our customers. We openly admit our mistakes and learn from them. And we tell the truth even if it feels uncomfortable or goes against the grain. Our actions and decisions are made with integrity and upstanding ethics in mind.

Family - Our workplace and our dealerships have the same sense of values as at home, where we care for each other through authentic relationships. We care about our customers the same way. We look out for one another so we also can take care of our families at home.

At the end of the day, we strive to cultivate honest, genuine relationships with our customers, dealers and employees and to do the right thing. It is these values that have led to our success and that lead us on into the future.

Financing a School Bus with Tax-Exempt Installment Purchase
Sep 25, 2017

What is a tax-exempt installment purchase and does it apply to my district?  Here are a few tips to help you navigate this unique financing option and decide if it is right for your fleet.

What is a Tax-Exempt Contract?  1*
A tax-exempt installment purchase is simply a contract that allows a public school district to finance the purchase of school buses and other equipment by making periodic payments over the life of the asset being financed. It's a straightforward and efficient way to acquire new school buses for your district.  But don't misinterpret simple as nominal. The benefits of a tax-exempt contract are much more extensive than you might expect.

Benefits of Tax-Exempt Contracts  2*
Tax-exempt installment purchases are included as a line item in your operating budget, and are treated as a lease rather than as a debt.  Therefore, voter referendum may not be required for the purchase and at the end of the day, you hold the title.
Interest rates for tax-exempt contracts are generally lower than commercial rates due to the tax-exempt treatment on the interest portion of the installment payments. The contracts come with flexible repayment terms with easy to add on schedules, which lowers your total cost of ownership and maximizes your budget. Your expense will align with the life-cycle of your bus and protect you from paying for a bus after it is no longer in service.  Plus, just like any other loan, you own the bus at the end of the payment cycle.

Does it sound like a tax-exempt installment purchase may be right for you?  Visit www.daimler-truckfinancial.com or speak with your local dealer to get a customized financing plan that meets your needs.

1*  Tax-exempt treatment is dependent upon the customer designating the contract as a qualified tax-exempt obligation within the meaning of Section 265(b)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
2*  Daimler Truck Financial does not provide tax or accounting advice.  Please consult with your advisor on any tax or accounting implications.
